The Community Dimensions of Learning Object Repositories project aims to identify and analyse the factors that influence practical uptake and implementation of learning object (LO) repositories, with a focus on social and cultural issues in support of Programme Objective ii. It will explore the use of LO repositories within learning communities based within single institutions as well as those that exist across institutions, regionally, nationally and internationally. Diverse learning communities are represented through eight project associates with considerable expertise in the development of LO repositories. The project partners will work closely with these associates to develop and test solutions to emerging requirements in support of uptake and implementation of LOs and LO repositories. Outputs include case studies and reports on a range of technical and process/workflow solutions; structured guidelines; and recommendations for institutional strategy and policy, that will be tested by a wide range of learning communities within a range of use cases. These outputs will be of benefit to the wider FE/HE community, particularly to senior managers and those implementing repositories. There will also be benefits to those engaged in initiatives working with other repository types as the project will collaborate closely with other Repository Programme projects to identify areas where common issues and solutions occur. The e-Map Scholar project was part of the Enhancing JISC data services for Teaching and Learning project cluster, with a focus on improving use of existing JISC owned resources through the JISC data services for learning and teaching. Digimap is a JISC-funded Web service that delivers Ordnance Survey (OS) cartographic products and digital map data across the Internet via a simple-to-use interface. Building on a successful JISC-funded Electronic Libraries (eLib) project, it provides convenient, on-demand access to some of the best and most detailed map data available anywhere in the world. e-Map Scholar aimed to support both those learners who need to progress to using these software packages, and also those whose needs are more simple: to understand how to use geo-spatial data more effectively. e-Map Scholar aimed to promote and enhance the use of digital map data in learning and teaching, by developing resources applicable to all geo-spatial data available to the academic community and to enable staff to provide new, exciting and adaptive learning materials using geo-spatial data. This two-year project seeks to develop and implement a sustainable business focused model for digital preservation, as part of a knowledge management agenda in higher education institutions. It will develop a model of the relationships, roles and responsibilities, costs, benefits and risks inherent in institutional digital preservation and implement this model by selling it to all the stakeholder groups, including senior management, administrative and clerical staff and academic teachers and researchers. In particular, this project seeks to identify the cost and benefits to the institution of developing a coherent, managed and sustainable approach to the preservation of its digital assets in a way that is transparent to all stakeholders. FISHnet is a JISC funded project that aims to help freshwater scientists more easily share scientific data. It is a joint project shared between the Freshwater Biological Association and the Centre for e-Research at King's College London. This project enables researchers in multiple academic, governmental and voluntary-sector institutions to share their data. Data is held securely in a sustainable subject repository which preserves and disseminates multiple datasets as part of the FreshwaterLife.org information portal. Conventional scientific method has historically been data-driven and with current technologies the wealth of created data assets has grown dramatically. Despite this importance, however, sharing data is not easy and many researchers have discussed the problems, including: the willingness to share, locating data, mechanisms for sharing and accessing data. Given these problems, the scoping of a Geospatial Repository for Academic Deposit and Extraction (GRADE) seems both necessary and timely. GRADE will investigate and report on the technical and cultural issues around the reuse of geospatial data within the JISC IE in the context of media-centric, informal and institutional repositories. The aim of GRADE is to lay the foundations for a sustainable infrastructure (both cultural and technical) that underwrites the communities' substantial and ongoing investment in the utilisation of geospatial resources within the learning, teaching and research environments of UK academia. harvesting the fitzwilliam

Since 1997 the Fitzwilliam Museum has been working to create, and provide access to, a unified electronic database of object records and images for the collections in the care of its five curatorial departments: antiquities, applied arts; coins and medals; illuminated and music; manuscripts, and rare printed books; paintings, drawings and prints. In 1999, the Museum received funding from Re:source (The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries) for the retrospective accessioning of prints and coins and the creation of complete records for all paintings. By January 2001 nearly 56,000 records were held electronically, although not yet all on a single database. By January 2002, in excess of 60,000 records were held centrally on 'Adlib Museum' - the chosen software system for the Fitzwilliam Museum's unified object catalogue. Many of the 60,000 records have associated images. The Online Public Access Catalogue, which provides web based access to the Adlib catalogue, was made available via the Museum's website in February 2002. During 2001-2002, approximately 20,000 objects were packed for storage in preparation for a major building extension to the Museum during 2002-2003. Many digital photographs of decanted objects were taken during this period. In parallel to the documentation work described, the Museum is developing A Museum for All, an electronic public information resource offering enhanced interpretation of a selection of key objects. This project complements the Documentation and JISC-FAIR projects. It will offer the user additional information, providing context and creating links between a selection of 300 objects over time, by themes, iconography, artists, materials and methods. It will encourage exploration of the collections and offer education and enjoyment both remotely and within the Museum when the project is complete in 2004. The Joint Information Steering Committee's Focus on Access to Information Resources programme offers the opportunity to further enhance access to the Museum's electronic object catalogue. Metadata (information about data generally, and information about objects in the Museum context specifically) for 100,000 Museum objects will be made available for 'harvesting', by the Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS), through the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). In addition, two specific databases - Corpus of Early Mediaeval Coins Finds (EMC) and Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles (SCBI) - will be made available for OAI harvesting by the Archaeology Data Service (ADS). The project, in line with the FAIR programmes objectives, will pilot and provide public access to information about selected Fitzwilliam Museum objects. ICT Guides is the only portal of its type within the digital arts and humanities field and has become a core resource in the field; listing many definitive projects along with the methods and tools used in their construction. It builds in part on the outcomes arising from the JISC funded ARIA project. ICT Guides is an effective model to promote existing resources in the arts and humanities whilst at the same time encouraging researchers to develop new projects, tools, and methods. The focus on high-quality and high profile projects means that the portal will always remain relevant to the work in the field and central and its methodological advances. The INLEI project is a largely qualitative investigation, comprising twenty case studies in a variety of institutions and in-depth internal reviews of the procedures and practices of The UHI Millenium Institute and The University of Bradford. The qualitative data has been supported by quantitative data from questionnaires. The LIFE project supports repositories and preservation by analysing costs of digital curation and lifecycle management. LIFE2 will build on this by: 1) Refining the LIFE methodology for the analysis and costing of the lifecycle of digital objects; 2) Providing a cross section of exemplar Case Studies, both to inform the LIFE methodology and to provide a benchmark for comparison and evaluation; 3) Enable HE and FE institutions to apply the LIFE methodology simply and easily to their own collections, and thus to evaluate and compare their activities in order to inform planning and increase workflow efficiency; 4) Compare, contrast and analyse the lifecycle costs of paper and digital collections, informing the use of differing approaches to preservation and access via digital and other surrogate technologies; 5) Identify where efficiencies can be made in the lifecycle costs of digital materials and provide guidance to funding bodies in areas such as preservation services and preservation tools; 6) Disseminate project findings and enable take up of the LIFE methodology. Feedback from past initiatives relating to the use of video in learning and teaching, notably the BFI/BUFVC/JISC Imagination/Universities Network Pilot project and HEFCE's Shotlist initiative, demonstrated that unless the collection of visual resources is of sufficient quality and comprehensive in coverage it is unlikely that lecturers will feel inspired to change their teaching habits. Lifesign will compile a collection of resources relevant to practical teaching within the life sciences and achieve the critical mass necessary to impact upon the delivery of the curriculum and effectively evaluate the educational potential of streamed video within a subject discipline. The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the use of networked moving picture and sound material for learning and teaching in the life sciences. This aim revolves around 3 main areas of activity: the development of a comprehensive set of resources focusing on a particular aspect or aspects of the life sciences; the development of appropriate metadata and the integration of resource discovery and retrieval facilities within a hybrid library system; and the development and implementation of an evaluation methodology for the material and its use in learning and teaching. The specific objectives are to: - Compile a comprehensive collection of video resources, in association with the relevant Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN4) Subject Centres, relevant to the practical teaching of a range of life science disciplines. This will comprise material already in existence and new commissions; - Structure and digitise the catalogue in a format appropriate for networked delivery via Metropolitan Area Networks; - Develop software that enables the full integration of multimedia resources in library catalogues and hybrid library systems; - Index, catalogue and compile the associated metadata for the resources in a format that can be integrated into existing library database systems; - Work with the JISC's Managing Agent and Advisory Service for Moving Pictures and Sound in order to clear rights for use of all resources identified and develop a licensing framework to facilitate the continued production of related resources from within the HE sector; - Install the digital collection on two Metropolitan Area Networks (SWMAN and LENS) providing local access for up to 18 HEIs; - Evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of streamed moving images within the life sciences and assess the impact upon current curriculum delivery; - Provide guidelines, supporting material and staff development to the Advisory Centre for Moving Pictures and Sound in order to embed the use of networked moving images within the DNER; - Develop the infrastructure necessary in order to sustain the continued development of this initiative beyond the lifespan of the project. LIW for academic and non academic staff' develops an existing Location Independent Working (LIW) scheme operating within the University's wholly-owned commercial company, Coventry University Enterprises Ltd. (CUE) to make it suitable for academic staff in teaching roles. CUE has successfully implemented LIW for over 50% (currently this amounts to c.75 people) of its staff. The project aligns the cultural change necessary at individual, departmental and institutional levels with the application of tried and tested technologies to develop a comprehensive e-working scheme for academic and non-academic staff. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that LIW can bring significant benefits to teaching staff, their employers and their students and to build an LIW framework that can be adopted by other members of the JISC community. The Oxford Digital Library has developed some introductory training materials on METS, primarily intended for internal use. This project will develop the existing materials further by making them less institutionally specific. The training materials will be delivered at six locations in the UK. Aims and Objectives Raise general awareness of METS and other closely related emerging standards both within the Programme and among the wider community served by JISC; Provide attendees with sufficient information to assess how METS and related standards might contribute to their institutions' current and planned digital preservation and asset management activities; Enable attendees to find out more about METS for themselves, and to prepare them for the METS tutorial workshops. Open Exeter was a JISC-funded project aiming to create an environment in which the University of Exeter was equipped to 'act open' with its research data. The objective was to create an environment in which Exeter was equipped to 'act open' with its research data in order to facilitate collaboration and increase the global impact of research. The Open Exeter project examined how research data is created, managed and used across the University of Exeter in order to create an institutional data repository for all types of research data. The PEG-BOARD project is topic-led, focusing on management of palaeoclimate data, an important research area today as a result of the worldwide focus on anthropocentric climate change. This data is presently reused by many communities: palaeoclimate research, predictive climate models, oceanography, atmospheric and earth science, biology and ecology, mathematics, archaeology, teaching in HE, and the media, publishing scientific communications for a global audience. The project focuses on enabling open access to historical climate data in a systematic, managed environment. PEG-BOARD explores the data management needs of a palaeoclimate research group and the linked ecosystem of researchers, including named project partners and associates active in Earth Sciences (University of Leeds), Archaeology (University of Southampton) and journalism/broadcasting (BBC). The purpose of this project is to investigate and set-up a pilot service that acts as an e-journals Preservation Registry [PEPRS]. This project draws upon the findings of a report commissioned by JISC: 'Scoping study for a registry of electronic journals that indicates where they are archived' which concluded that a pilot project should be setup to test the feasibility of setting up an e-journals registry and recommended that it should leverage an existing resource such as SUNCat in order to provide the backbone of the registry information. The overall aim is to provide librarians and policy makers with information on provision for continuing access to the total corpus of scholarly work published in e-journals. SCRAN and System Simulation Ltd are partners in the Go-pix! project, which will deliver an image portal demonstrator to JISC by the end of October. The demonstrator will be a fully functional portal, enabling cross-searching across eight image collections. The project will be managed in two phases. Phase 1 will result in an interim demonstrator, integrating an initial set of collections. We will test the interim demonstrator and carry out user evaluation at the end of phase 1. Our findings will then inform the further development of the portal through phase 2 and the integration of the remaining collections. During the final part of phase 2, we will write a project implementation report and specifications for a full image portal. Aims and Objectives: We aim to build a fully operational, highly functional demonstrator image portal, providing a suitable platform and basis to examine the issues and validity of implementing a full service. The project also aims to show how a full-service image portal can be used across further and higher education to enrich and develop the learning and research process. The demonstrator will be underpinned by interoperable standards, enabling a range of searching/browsing and viewing functions across the eight image collections. We will explore - and implement where we can - possibilities and good practice in portal development, so that the demonstrator can meet the highest standards of usability.
