The University of Cumbria is a university in Cumbria, England. Its headquarters are in Carlisle. and other major campuses are at Penrith, Ambleside and Lancaster. It was established in 2007, with roots extending back to the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts established in 1822 and Charlotte Mason teacher training College in the 1890s. The university is based upon the idea of a "distributed learning network", so that teaching takes place both at the university's main campuses, and at colleges of further education around Cumbria, a rural county that includes the Lake District. As well as its work in the areas of the arts, health and teacher training, the university has a faculty of Arts, Business and Science which, as well as the subjects in its title, incorporates a full range of courses including law, computing, and police studies. Sciences include Forestry, Land Management, Forensic Science and Environment. University of Cumbria is notable for being one of only a handful of chosen universities in the country to be accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists. The University of Derby is a university in the city of Derby, England. The main site is on Kedleston Road, Allestree in the north-west of the city and is located close to the A38 and opposite Markeaton Park. The University also has a campus in Buxton, Derbyshire, known as the Devonshire Campus, which is a grade II* listed building that has a dome which is over 145 ft (44 m) in diameter, bigger than that of St Paul's Cathedral in London. The university was formally opened by Prince Charles in February 2006. A contemporary-styled building for Arts, Design and Technology students on Markeaton Street in Derby was formally opened in early November 2007 by Richard Branson. Courses are also run at the Britannia Mill site in Derby and in the town of Chesterfield. The University provides nearly 300 study programmes at undergraduate level. The University of Bedfordshire is based in Luton and Bedford, the two largest towns in the English county of Bedfordshire. The university was created by the merger of the University of Luton and the Bedford campus of De Montfort University on 1 August 2006 following approval by the Privy Council. The University of Luton purchased the De Montfort campus in Bedford for £15 million. The University of Luton was a university based in Luton, the largest town in Bedfordshire. The institution was founded as the Modern School in the 1890s. It became Luton College of Higher Education with the merger of Luton College of Technology and Putteridge Bury College of Education in the mid-seventies. With the passing of the Further and Higher Education Act, 1992 it converted to university status in 1993. On the 15 December 2005, the University announced that it was taking over the Bedford campus of De Montfort University. With permission from the Privy Council, the preferred name of the University of Bedfordshire came into effect on 1 August 2006. The campus at Bedford dates back to the Bedford Training College for Teachers which was founded in 1882 and Bedford Physical Training College founded in 1903. These merged with a further education college to become the Bedford College of Higher Education. In 1994 the higher education areas of the college merged with De Montfort University (based in Leicester). There are currently just under 3,000 students based in Bedford.
