The Research Information Network completed its work as a publicly-funded research and policy unit. On 31 December 2011, the block grant provided to the RIN by its consortium of funders (the UK higher education funding councils, the seven research councils and the three national libraries) came to an end, and the RIN ceased to exist in the form that it had taken since 2005. On 1 January 2012, the RIN was launched as a new venture, a community interest company that undertakes research and analysis, as well as facilitation and coordination, with the aim of improving accessibility, availability and understanding of research information resources and services; and promoting the development of effective policies and strategies for the benefit of researchers and all those interested in their findings.
