The University of Bristol is a university in Bristol, England. One of the so-called "red brick" universities, it received its Royal Charter in 1909, although its predecessor institution, University College, Bristol, had been in existence since 1876. Bristol is the most popular multifaculty university in the UK, with over 14 applicants vying for each place, and average A-level attainment of successful entrants of just under 4 grade As. For some of the most popular courses, such as Economics and Law, the applicant to place ratio is often as high as 40:1. The University has an annual turnover of £347m and is the largest independent employer in Bristol. The University is a member of the Russell Group, The European-wide Coimbra Group and the Worldwide Universities Network, of which the University's Vice-Chancellor Prof Eric Thomas was Chair (2005-2007).
