Maintained by two government-funded organisations - the National Council for Educational Technology and the Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research (CILT) - Lingu@NET is a 'virtual language centre' providing free information and resources for teachers, learners and researchers. The site consists of four main areas: materials, training, research, and - added recently - Web sites for languages. Lingu@NET includes a simple on-line enquiry service, links to reports produced for the G7 Tel*Lingua project, and a searchable database of current language-learning research covering nearly 200 UK projects.

Through a series of comprehensive information sheets, Lingu@NET identifies resources and materials that can be used for teaching major European languages (some Japanese and Russian resources are included elsewhere). Target age level ranges from primary to adult learners. Actual materials are not included, however, although some case study information is available, such as 'home grown' resources to be shared over the Internet and adapted by users. Some information sheets seem to be based largely on the CILT Resources Library holdings, although material from a wide range of booksellers, publishers and distributors is included, as is an impressive quantity of data and contact information.

Lingu@NET bears all the credentials of a good Web site, but is noticeably still under development: several links do not work, and the 'frontier' notice informing visitors that they are leaving Lingu@NET was not apparent. The site is worth a visit by teachers and students of modern languages, and is likely to improve over the coming months.
