Yahoo! UK & Ireland was launched in September 1996, and is one of a range of more specialist Yahoos coming online - Yahoo! Canada, Yahoo! Japan and Yahooligans (for children) having been launched earlier this year. Promising "immediate access to national content, as well as a broad base of general interest content", Yahoo! UK & Ireland is similar in structure to the original Yahoo!. However, the UK service offers the user has the option of exploring either UK, Irish, or Worldwide links and categories on each category page.
There was some discussion of Yahoo! UK & Ireland on lis-elib , particularly about whether it poses serious competition for the eLib ANR projects . It seems likely that it will complement rather than threaten the subject-based information gateways. The descriptions of resources on Yahoo! are very brief, but it is a much larger database.

The service does need to be browsed or searched with caution. The search engine will return links to UK and Irish sites/categories before links to worldwide resources, but this may not be obvious to a new user. However, British and Irish flags provide a visual indication of the origin of a site!
