EMC Update
Linda Kerr outlines some of the
developments in the Engineering, Mathematics and Computing Hub

The Engineering, Mathematics and Computing Hub (EMC) is part of the
national Resource Discovery Network (RDN), and has been in existence for
seven months. Of course, EEVL, the engineering gateway, has been
operational for three-and-a-half years. The EMC Hub can be viewed as a
collection of gateways (which may eventually become portals) with technical
facilities and some co-ordination provided by Heriot-Watt University, rather
than a new gateway in itself. The gateways in the Hub benefit greatly
from the institutional support from Heriot-Watt University (EEVL), Cranfield
University (who supply EEVL with records from their Aerospace and Defence
Gateway, AERADE) and the University of Birmingham (MathGate). Funding
for a third gateway/portal in computing and information sciences is
under consideration by JISC. The Hub has web pages at
http://www.emc.ac.uk which give
basic information about the Hub, and points to the constituent gateways.
Roddy MacLeod, the EEVL Manager has written in this edition of Ariadne about
the latest activities of the EEVL gateway.
Work is now starting on the Mathematics Gateway, to be known as
MathGate. A project officer has been appointed, Greig Fratus, who
until recently worked as the Information Officer for CTI Mathematics at
the University of Birmingham. Steve Hewett of Information Services
at the University of Birmingham is the Project Manager.
MathGate aims to cover all areas of interest to the mathematics
community in Higher Education and is collaborating with the mathematics
branch of the LTSN (Learning and Teaching Support Network) Centre for
Mathematics, Statistics and OR. It is hoped that it will be operational by
summer 2000. MathGate will be available at www.mathgate.ac.uk. For
more information, see http://www.emc.ac.uk/mathgate.html.
