The LIFE project supports repositories and preservation by analysing costs of digital curation and lifecycle management. LIFE2 will build on this by: 1) Refining the LIFE methodology for the analysis and costing of the lifecycle of digital objects; 2) Providing a cross section of exemplar Case Studies, both to inform the LIFE methodology and to provide a benchmark for comparison and evaluation; 3) Enable HE and FE institutions to apply the LIFE methodology simply and easily to their own collections, and thus to evaluate and compare their activities in order to inform planning and increase workflow efficiency; 4) Compare, contrast and analyse the lifecycle costs of paper and digital collections, informing the use of differing approaches to preservation and access via digital and other surrogate technologies; 5) Identify where efficiencies can be made in the lifecycle costs of digital materials and provide guidance to funding bodies in areas such as preservation services and preservation tools; 6) Disseminate project findings and enable take up of the LIFE methodology. The project is managed by University College London (UCL), in partnership with The British Library, the SHERPA-LEAP Consortium, SHERPA-DP and the Medical Research Council. Feedback from past initiatives relating to the use of video in learning and teaching, notably the BFI/BUFVC/JISC Imagination/Universities Network Pilot project and HEFCE's Shotlist initiative, demonstrated that unless the collection of visual resources is of sufficient quality and comprehensive in coverage it is unlikely that lecturers will feel inspired to change their teaching habits. Lifesign will compile a collection of resources relevant to practical teaching within the life sciences and achieve the critical mass necessary to impact upon the delivery of the curriculum and effectively evaluate the educational potential of streamed video within a subject discipline. The overall aim of the project is to evaluate the use of networked moving picture and sound material for learning and teaching in the life sciences. This aim revolves around 3 main areas of activity: the development of a comprehensive set of resources focusing on a particular aspect or aspects of the life sciences; the development of appropriate metadata and the integration of resource discovery and retrieval facilities within a hybrid library system; and the development and implementation of an evaluation methodology for the material and its use in learning and teaching. The specific objectives are to: - Compile a comprehensive collection of video resources, in association with the relevant Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN4) Subject Centres, relevant to the practical teaching of a range of life science disciplines. This will comprise material already in existence and new commissions; - Structure and digitise the catalogue in a format appropriate for networked delivery via Metropolitan Area Networks; - Develop software that enables the full integration of multimedia resources in library catalogues and hybrid library systems; - Index, catalogue and compile the associated metadata for the resources in a format that can be integrated into existing library database systems; - Work with the JISC's Managing Agent and Advisory Service for Moving Pictures and Sound in order to clear rights for use of all resources identified and develop a licensing framework to facilitate the continued production of related resources from within the HE sector; - Install the digital collection on two Metropolitan Area Networks (SWMAN and LENS) providing local access for up to 18 HEIs; - Evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of streamed moving images within the life sciences and assess the impact upon current curriculum delivery; - Provide guidelines, supporting material and staff development to the Advisory Centre for Moving Pictures and Sound in order to embed the use of networked moving images within the DNER; - Develop the infrastructure necessary in order to sustain the continued development of this initiative beyond the lifespan of the project. Linking Parliamentary Records through Metadata (LIPARM) project is designed to allow for the first time the federated searching and browsing of UK and Ireland Parliamentary papers by defining and implementing a unified metadata strategy for historical and contemporary parliamentary digitisation projects. This project defines a generic XML schema for parliamentary metadata, defines controlled vocabularies for key components of this metadata, and produces a platform for a union catalogue of these materials based on the records created. lis research coalition

The LIS Research Coalition was established in 2009 as a three-year project by its founding members. The broad mission of the LIS Research Coalition is to facilitate a co-ordinated and strategic approach to LIS research across the UK. The Coalition aims to: bring together information about LIS research opportunities and results; encourage dialogue between research funders; promote LIS practitioner research and the translation of research outcomes into practice; articulate a strategic approach to LIS research; promote the development of research capacity in LIS. The aim of this project is to implement an open-source reading list system ('List8d') that is accessible and easy to use for all user groups. List8D should also be a useful and sustainable resource for the JISC Information Environment. The project aims to achieve the following technical goals: Portable data with the ability to feed information to and from mashups. Open content and open standards. Solution to be reusable, by any institution, with a well-documented API. Support for tools such as Refworks, Endnote, and Zotero. Internationalisation support. We aim to achieve the following business and user-oriented goals: Help librarians manage their stock levels and serve students better. Be easy for the students to use, with information served by the application accessible in a variety of places. Ideally the students will not be aware of the existence of the application, they will simply see reading lists appearing in appropriate places. Provide accurate information for librarians and library managers, saving time and avoiding unsuitable or inaccurate inputs into the reading list system. Be easy for the academics to use, and help them to ensure that there are sufficient course materials available for the students. Promote agile development practises within the University of Kent. LIW for academic and non academic staff' develops an existing Location Independent Working (LIW) scheme operating within the University's wholly-owned commercial company, Coventry University Enterprises Ltd. (CUE) to make it suitable for academic staff in teaching roles. CUE has successfully implemented LIW for over 50% (currently this amounts to c.75 people) of its staff. The project aligns the cultural change necessary at individual, departmental and institutional levels with the application of tried and tested technologies to develop a comprehensive e-working scheme for academic and non-academic staff. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that LIW can bring significant benefits to teaching staff, their employers and their students and to build an LIW framework that can be adopted by other members of the JISC community. This work will investigate metadata application profile requirements for learning materials in relation to digital repositories. This follows the development of an ePrints application profile undertaken within the JISC Digital Repositories Programme and led by Andy Powell (Eduserv Foundation) and Julie Allinson (RRT UKOLN) on behalf of JISC. Application profiles for images, time based media and Geospatial are also being developed. As 'learning materials" encompass a much wider range of resource types than these other activities, and as there is a range of related specifications (e.g. Content Packaging, Learning Design, QTI) to be taken into consideration, it follows that this particular scoping study may require a different approach to that taken by the ePrints profile. It is proposed that the learning materials application profiles scoping study should synthesize and analyse the advice that is currently available to managers of repositories of educational materials who need to define a metadata element set to describing the resources in their collections. A typical collection of learning materials is likely to include a wide range of resource types (e.g. images, web pages, digital media, assessment items) all of which require description. In addition there are other factors such as accessibility and preservation that may need to be considered when describing resources. Most domains and resource types have developed their own specialised metadata and have their own perception of the minimum effort required for best practice. Project start date: 2007-12-01. We will also be working in partnership with Eduserv, Talis and OCLC, leading experts within their fields. We want to put archival and bibliographic data at the heart of the Linked Data Web, enabling new links to be made between diverse content sources and enabling the free and flexible exploration of data so that researchers can make new connections between subjects, people, organisations and places to reveal more about our history and society. The Mobile Campus Assistant project will make existing campus-related information available to University of Bristol students via their mobiles and location-aware smart phones. By building a prototype, open source mobile smart phone application and a mobile-specific web site the project aims to provide students on the move with a demonstration 'where is my nearest...' service, combining up-to-date information from campus sources (e.g. public PC and room availability, wireless hotspots, directions, timetables) with external public data and services including Google maps and City transport timetables. Memento is a United States National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP)-funded project aimed at making Web-archived content more readily discoverable. This project is being led by the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Old Dominion University. Rather than expecting people to know about the growing number of Web archives, and to guess which archive might hold an older version of the resource they're looking for, Memento proposes to make archived content discoverable via the original URL that the searcher already knew about. Meetings pervade the life of almost all researchers, and increasingly, these take the form of telephone and videoconferences amongst geographically dispersed colleagues. Supporting distributed meetings that are as productive as face-to-face meetings is a primary challenge for research and development in this field. This is the motivation for this proposal. The Access Grid(tm) (AG) is an open collaboration and resource management architecture that already provides many of the capabilities proposed by the JISC for a Virtual Research Environment (VRE). The overall aim of the project is to extend the functionality of the AG with advanced meeting support and information management tools that were developed and validated in the recent e-Science project, CoAKTinG. The project will also deploy this environment as a prototype VRE with end-user communities in order to test, evaluate and discover further user requirements. Our end-user partners represent a cross-section of communities interested in the potential of the proposed VRE to meet their needs. The areas represented by our partners include performance art, social science, middleware development and minority communities. These diverse users will help the project to evaluate the generic value of its capabilities. A phased deployment and evaluation process is planned, starting with the immediate project team as users, to address obvious usability and technical issues, before extending to the project partners who will subject the tools to a more formal evaluation. The Oxford Digital Library has developed some introductory training materials on METS, primarily intended for internal use. This project will develop the existing materials further by making them less institutionally specific. The training materials will be delivered at six locations in the UK. Aims and Objectives Raise general awareness of METS and other closely related emerging standards both within the Programme and among the wider community served by JISC; Provide attendees with sufficient information to assess how METS and related standards might contribute to their institutions' current and planned digital preservation and asset management activities; Enable attendees to find out more about METS for themselves, and to prepare them for the METS tutorial workshops. MIDRIB Project was designed to create, maintain and deliver a comprehensive collection of medical images in digital form for use in teaching and research, in medical and healthcare faculties of Universities and teaching hospitals. The project drew together the best of existing collections into a coherent resource within a single point of reference. This start-up repository project will develop a warehouse of medical images and facilitate effective online retrieval tools in the institutional web site to complement the existing online e-leaning and teaching system OASISplus, also known as Blackboard Vista. mobile campus assistant

The Placement Learning and Assessment Toolkit project acknowledges that practice-based learning and the mentoring process would be improved with tools which allowed on-the-spot entry of results of assessments, such that feedback was given and follow-up actions were decided immediately. The project aims to provide a mobile learning toolkit to support practice-based learning, mentoring, and assessment, and to add mobile assessment tools to the e-framework. The project will develop a 'back office' infrastructure to support the deployment of the proposed toolkit and two selected tools. Phase 1 development comprises toolkit analysis, design, and implementation, followed by pilot and evaluation within a simulated environment based in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Phases 2 and 3 involve the application and implementation of the toolkit within real clinical contexts associated with the University of Southampton Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care located within the Health Care Innovation Unit, Thames Valley University, and Bournemouth and Poole College. mobile internet detective

The Intute Internet Detective is already positioned as an extremely popular, well respected online tutorial, helping the user to assess the academic validity of websites. The project intends to build on the existing service by extending its reach to include mobile users, who, as the mobile Internet has developed, have come to expect higher standards when browsing on their handsets. The needs and behaviour of a mobile surfer differs greatly from a desktop surfer, so 'The Mobile Internet Detective' will deliver a user friendly mobile site that is fast and inexpensive to load, providing the right content, presented in the right order and with an adapted layout. Based on work to date under D2D, this project aims to develop a demonstrator of `My References'. Through this demonstrator, Copac users would be able to aggregate, tag and annotate resources from all services and maintain them separately in their desired web 2.0 contexts. The user will be able to get an Atom feed of the records they've saved with the long-term potential to manage their collection of records within Copac or a suitable APP client outside of the Copac web site - for instance a VLE, blog, RSS reader, or clients such as Netvibes. We will also investigate how this technology can be applied in the Shibboleth authentication environment across services and search sessions over time. Project start date: 2009-03-02.
