The Oxford Digital Library has developed some introductory training materials on METS, primarily intended for internal use. This project will develop the existing materials further by making them less institutionally specific. The training materials will be delivered at six locations in the UK. This start-up repository project will develop a warehouse of medical images and facilitate effective online retrieval tools in the institutional web site to complement the existing online e-leaning and teaching system OASISplus, also known as Blackboard Vista. Based on work to date under D2D, this project aims to develop a demonstrator of `My References'. Through this demonstrator, Copac users would be able to aggregate, tag and annotate resources from all services and maintain them separately in their desired web 2.0 contexts. The user will be able to get an Atom feed of the records they've saved with the long-term potential to manage their collection of records within Copac or a suitable APP client outside of the Copac web site - for instance a VLE, blog, RSS reader, or clients such as Netvibes. We will also investigate how this technology can be applied in the Shibboleth authentication environment across services and search sessions over time. Project start date: 2009-03-02. Open Exeter was a JISC-funded project aiming to create an environment in which the University of Exeter was equipped to 'act open' with its research data. The objective was to create an environment in which Exeter was equipped to 'act open' with its research data in order to facilitate collaboration and increase the global impact of research. The Open Exeter project examined how research data is created, managed and used across the University of Exeter in order to create an institutional data repository for all types of research data. The OER Sustainability through Teaching & Research Innovation: Cascading across HEIs (OSTRICH) project, led by the University of Leicester, will transfer and cascade, in usable formats, the key outcomes of Leicester's institutional OER pilot project (OTTER, www.le.ac.uk/otter) to the universities of Bath and Derby. OSTRICH will enable both cascade partners to contextualise key OER lessons learnt, test and transfer OER models, leading to a sustainable approach to OER development and release. 100 credits' worth of OERs in key priority areas will be released by each cascade partner and deposited into the project's own repository and JorumOpen. Stakeholder engagement and benefit will be ensured from day 1 via a robust and realistic workplan, implemented by a highly experienced team with ample OER experience and commitment. The partnership has a track record of delivering on previous successful externally-funded projects. OSTRICH's deliverables and benefits will be disseminated widely and creatively across the partnership, the sector and internationally well beyond the project's life. Project start date: 2010-09-01. The PEG-BOARD project is topic-led, focusing on management of palaeoclimate data, an important research area today as a result of the worldwide focus on anthropocentric climate change. This data is presently reused by many communities: palaeoclimate research, predictive climate models, oceanography, atmospheric and earth science, biology and ecology, mathematics, archaeology, teaching in HE, and the media, publishing scientific communications for a global audience. The project focuses on enabling open access to historical climate data in a systematic, managed environment. PEG-BOARD explores the data management needs of a palaeoclimate research group and the linked ecosystem of researchers, including named project partners and associates active in Earth Sciences (University of Leeds), Archaeology (University of Southampton) and journalism/broadcasting (BBC). The purpose of this project is to investigate and set-up a pilot service that acts as an e-journals Preservation Registry [PEPRS]. This project draws upon the findings of a report commissioned by JISC: 'Scoping study for a registry of electronic journals that indicates where they are archived' which concluded that a pilot project should be setup to test the feasibility of setting up an e-journals registry and recommended that it should leverage an existing resource such as SUNCat in order to provide the backbone of the registry information. The overall aim is to provide librarians and policy makers with information on provision for continuing access to the total corpus of scholarly work published in e-journals. PICTIVA was initiated in part as a response to the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) user survey of 1998 that identified a number of problems affecting use of online resources. These included a lack of knowledge about what was available or the perceived lack of relevance of online resources to academic users as well as a lack of time to engage with new technologies. The project is a partnership between the VADS based at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College and the Institute for Image Data Research (IIDR) based at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. The tools and systems development will be done with the help of Systems Simulations Ltd (SSL). PICTIVA aims to promote the use of online image collections in learning and teaching in the visual arts by developing a range of generic tools to support access to the images and targeted materials to support their use. The usability of the VADS image database will be improved by providing ease of access to, and navigation of, the image collections held by VADS. The specific objectives are to: Develop tools that will include tutorials on how to use the site effectively as well as look at how the VADS search and retrieval systems can be improved. It will also feature a trial of contents-based image retrieval which will allow users to search VADS images on visual aspects rather than text descriptors; Produce learning and teaching materials based on the collections held by VADS, giving contextual information as well as recognising and incorporating good practice in the design of online learning and teaching resources; Produce case studies which will detail how they have been used in the context of real learning and teaching situations. The aim of the PIRUS2 Project is to enable publishers, repositories and other organizations to generate and share authoritative, trustworthy usage statistics for the individual articles and other items that they host. The project has the following main objectives: developing a suite of free, open source programmes to support the generation and sharing of COUNTER compliant usage data and statistics that can be extended to cover any and all individual items in repositories; develop a prototype article level Publisher/Repository statistics service; defining a core set of standard usage statistics reports that repositories should produce for internal and external consumption. SCRAN and System Simulation Ltd are partners in the Go-pix! project, which will deliver an image portal demonstrator to JISC by the end of October. The demonstrator will be a fully functional portal, enabling cross-searching across eight image collections. The project will be managed in two phases. Phase 1 will result in an interim demonstrator, integrating an initial set of collections. We will test the interim demonstrator and carry out user evaluation at the end of phase 1. Our findings will then inform the further development of the portal through phase 2 and the integration of the remaining collections. During the final part of phase 2, we will write a project implementation report and specifications for a full image portal. Aims and Objectives: We aim to build a fully operational, highly functional demonstrator image portal, providing a suitable platform and basis to examine the issues and validity of implementing a full service. The project also aims to show how a full-service image portal can be used across further and higher education to enrich and develop the learning and research process. The demonstrator will be underpinned by interoperable standards, enabling a range of searching/browsing and viewing functions across the eight image collections. We will explore - and implement where we can - possibilities and good practice in portal development, so that the demonstrator can meet the highest standards of usability. The PROWE project (Personal Repositories Online: WIKI Environment) will provide an innovative informal environment to support collaboration and learning amongst part-time, remote tutors on distance education programmes, and will build on and be evaluated alongside the asset repositories and digital library collections which are already available. PROWE will address some of the practical issues of building an information sharing culture, by examining the informal and formal exchange mechanisms between remote workers in an institutional context. Informal repositories such as BLIKIs, WIKIs and weblogs offer the lighter touch approach (no moderation, for example) and therefore, less staff resource intensive options to engage part-time remote tutors in interacting with other forms of repositories whilst they are analysing, synthesizing and producing new forms of knowledge. Although the contexts used for this investigation are the strategic organisational contexts of two large distance education providers, The Open University (OU) and University of Leicester (UoL), there will be transferable lessons to other employers of part-time and distributed teaching staff. PROWE will offer tools both for storing and managing resources, such as case studies, personal library resources, and making them available through informal conversational networks. The deliverables will be a demonstrator, proof of concept, and toolkit for sharing good practice and guidelines on integration of informal networks with more formal enterprise repository systems, case studies and an evaluation report which addresses the wider applicability of informal and personal repositories for remote and part-time tutors. The Readiness4REF (R4R) project, led by King's College London and the University of Southampton, will investigate and implement how to streamline the REF data gathering exercise by building an interoperable institutional infrastructure, including repositories, that would capture and manage research outputs and other factors. R4R wil start by analysing current practice to look at the data already being collected by HEIs, and the systems they use. This will be compared to the data we anticipate being required for REF (admittedly, a moving target) to draw up a specification. It will also study the CERIF metadata model - which is receiving growing interest from the repository community as well as in research information systems - to see how it could deal with REF data requirements. We anticipate CERIF will need augmenting with addditional elements for this purpose, and will develop an application profile called CERIF4REF. The AP will specify which elements are required, and give guidance/instruction for the content of those fields. CERIF4REF will be evaluated against the real-world settings of case studies in pilot institutions, and submitted formally for adoption by euroCRIS (the membership organisation responsible for CERIF). At the same time, it will be mapped to external data sources, such as research councils or publishers like Thompson ISI and Elsevier. Presuming the various pilots are successful, developers will create plug-ins for the ePRints, DSpace and Fedora Commons repository platforms. King's and Southampton will adopt demonstrator repositories which implement CERIF4REF to manage data from internal and external sources ready for REF submission. There will even be exchange of data between the two institutions to mimic the movement of academics. RFR will ensure to consult and inform the community through the life of the project, not least through the REF Stakeholders Group of interested parties brought together by King's and HEFCE in three recent conferences (http://www.kcl.ac.uk/iss/research/ref/). The Resource Discovery Network (RDN) is a JISC-funded service dedicated to providing effective access to high quality Internet resources for the learning, teaching and research community. The RDN provides access to a series of Internet resource catalogues containing descriptions of high quality Internet sites, selected and described by specialists from within UK academia and affiliated organisations. Originally funded by higher education (HE), since Spring 2000, the JISC has been supported by both the further education (FE) and HE funding councils in the UK. In response to this change in remit, the RDN has been working closely with the FE community to develop its services to ensure their relevance to this new audience. In the last year, this has been achieved via two key projects in particular: RDN Virtual Training Suite for FE (VTS4FE): after a ten month project, in June 2002, the RDN launched eleven new tutorials in the Virtual Training Suite aimed specifically at FE users. RDN Case Studies for FE (RDN Case Studies): the RDN is currently working with a group of FE practitioners who are evaluating the content of hub catalogues for particular FE curriculum subject areas and are producing case studies aimed at FE staff based on RDN resources (available end 2002). recruitment toolkit

A large proportion of JISC projects need to recruit new staff. Failure to secure the right resource in a timely manner can have a significant effect on projects achieving the project objectives. Many members of the repository community have limited experience of recruiting staff for projects, and no comprehensive central toolkit is available to assist them in doing it. JISC has therefore commissioned Brunton Consulting to prepare a tailored recruitment toolkit to assist projects in identifying, selecting and recruiting the right people in a timely manner to enable project objectives to be achieved. Brunton Consulting will engage the community to gather issues, identify resources that may be useful and to test the toolkit that is produced. Ripple will provide a package of expert support, guidance and training to two partner institutions who are not currently involved in OER release, helping these institutions to understand the institutional implications, investigate possible solutions for sustainable OER release, encourage the development of effective engagement and dissemination strategies, and release material under a Creative Commons licence. The two partners are Oxford Brookes University and Harper Adams University College. Ripple will deliver a series of training workshops and tailored support sessions plus supporting documents for the partner institutions. The project will also release recordings of the presentations at the training workshops as OER via JorumOpen and the project website for the benefit of the wider HE community. The project will be led by the team at Oxford responsible for OpenSpires (funded under HEA/JISC Open Educational Resources Programme Phase 1). Project start date: 2010-09-01.
