stargate

The Stargate project, based at the Centre for Digital Library Research at the University of Strathclyde, will explore the use of static repositories as a means of exposing publisher metadata to OAI-based disclosure, discovery and alerting services within the JISC IE and beyond. Static repositories were developed as an alternative to fully fledged OAI-compliant repositories and have been implemented successfully within the Open Language Archives Community as a means of widening participation in OAI-based systems and services. The project builds on the successful use of static repositories by HaIRST project in JISC's FAIR programme. It also builds on the technical architecture developed by Heriot Watt University in their PALS I project OAI-compliant metadata repository for a specialist publisher of e-journals. The project's primary aim will be to lower the technical barriers to the implementation of OAI-compliant repositories, thereby enabling small publishers of electronic resources to participate more readily in OAI-based disclosure and delivery services within the JISC IE and beyond. Specifically, it will implement a series of static repositories of publisher metadata, demonstrate the interoperability of the exposed metadata through harvesting and cross-searching via a static repository gateway, and conduct a critical evaluation of the static repository approach with publishers and service providers. The project has two key objectives to: build an interoperability demonstrator based around the static repository gateway developed in the HaIRST project and dovetailing with the OAI-based architecture developed in PALS I; develop tools and guidelines that will facilitate the implementation of static repositories by small publishers that wish to expose their metadata to OAI-based services. SWORD Project has developed a lightweight protocol for depositing content from one location to another. It stands for Simple Web-service Offering Repository Deposit and is a profile of the Atom Publishing Protocol (known as APP or ATOMPUB). SWORD has been funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to develop the SWORD profile and a number of demonstration implementations. The SWORD vision is 'lowering the barriers to deposit', principally for depositing content (any content!) into repositories, but potentially for depositing into any system which wants to receive content from remote sources. uk theses digitisation project

Digitising at least 20,000 paper-borne UK theses will 'kick start' the EThOS service, which will allow open access to theses in electronic form. The project will deliver a fully operational, easily scaleable and financially viable prototype of an UK e-theses online service that will enable users, via one single web interface, to access the full text of electronically stored theses after selection from a database of UK theses. UK postgraduate theses are a very important source of primary research output but, says Colin Galloway, project director of EthOs, "There are currently thousands of theses sitting on the shelves of UK academic libraries, many of which will never have been read by anyone other than the author and supervisor. Even in those cases where there is knowledge of their existence there is no easy access to their content, with the result that potentially useful information is disregarded purely because of logistic/bureaucratic impediments." Under this project, 20,000 digitised theses will be freely supplied as open access, enabling all researchers regardless of location or time to search for, identify and order digitised UK theses, a resource which has had limited exposure via the British Library catalogue (metadata only minus abstract) and the commercial subscription Index To Thesis product. The theses will be supplied to researchers as pdfs. The researcher will be able to read the thesis image on his/her computer screen but, by printing the pdf, he or she will get an exact surrogate of the original thesis. By sourcing surrogates from the electronically stored copies, the original paper theses will be accessed less frequently and so will be better preserved. There are around 500,000 paper theses originating from UK Higher Education Institutions and dating from 1730. Although the project is digitising only 1% of the overall total, it will target the most 'popular' - those that are most likely to be requested and supplied to researchers - so the greater impact will be to release EThOS digitisation resources to digitise further theses. The contemporary experience of users on the Web has undergone marked transformations owing to trends such as Web 2.0, Cloud Computing and the associated user-centered propensities. These transformations have had significant impacts on user experience (UX) and the expectation of how digital libraries should be facilitated. yodl-ing

YODL-ING will use technology to enhance and embed repositories into the information infrastructure of the University of York and will offer re-usable solutions and recommendations for the wider HE, JISC and Fedora communities. Working with project partners, YODL-ING will build two significant services. One will utilise the SWORD protocol to expedite deposit into a number of repositories from a single deposit interface. The other will offer a simple, yet scalable solution to access control, enabling the expression of policies in machine-readable format and utilising Shibboleth to control access to users at York and at any other Higher Education institution. Crucial to this is that we maintain the ability to offer a hybrid repository, where access controlled content is managed alongside open access resources. The project will also explore tools, semantic approaches and web services to enhance metadata generation, using 'crowd intelligence' approaches, combined with existing workflows. Work on accessibility will ensure the widest possible support for users and a study of digital preservation will facilitation preservation strategy planning for the long-term. The Arts and Humanities e-Science Initiative was jointly funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and JISC. The Initiative aimed to enable research practitioners to embed the advanced use of ICT in their research and teaching practices. It will also facilitated collaboration across traditional subject and discipline boundaries. The Arts and Humanities e-Science Support Centre (AHeSSC) forms a critical part of the AHRC-JISC-EPSRC Arts and Humanities E-Science Initiative. Analysing Raptor at Kent (ARK) is a project adopting the production version of the Raptor toolkit and using it to improve our understanding of the demand for and use of electronic journals and databases, by the staff and students of the University of Kent. Raptor reports allow assessment of the usage of each Academic school, which can use this data to ensure provision of resources appropriate to the needs of users and to improve internal charging models. The project builds on the work of the successful Raptor pilot programme at Kent. The pilot established the viability of running a pre-release version of the Raptor toolkit, on the UniversityÆs servers. This pilot also made a preliminary assessment of management overheads, software reliability, response times, support costs and the usefulness of Raptor reports to the needs of the Library and IT services. artworld

Artworld provides an up-to-date overview of each subject in the teaching of world art with discussion material and, in some cases, insights into current debates and controversies. Each module contains background information, summarising different approaches to the material, with up-to-date bibliographies, maps, timelines and numerous links to other relevant pictorial and museum resources. The teaching modules are backed up by a comprehensive database of images from the cultures represented in the museum collections at the Oriental Museum, University of Durham, and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, University of East Anglia. Interactive resources have been provided in order to enable users to adapt content to their own teaching. Contributions can be made in the form of appended texts on any page. There are also facilities to create mini-galleries by assembling collections of images and texts. These may be used as the basis for lectures, seminar presentations or essays. The Community Dimensions of Learning Object Repositories project aims to identify and analyse the factors that influence practical uptake and implementation of learning object (LO) repositories, with a focus on social and cultural issues in support of Programme Objective ii. It will explore the use of LO repositories within learning communities based within single institutions as well as those that exist across institutions, regionally, nationally and internationally. Diverse learning communities are represented through eight project associates with considerable expertise in the development of LO repositories. The project partners will work closely with these associates to develop and test solutions to emerging requirements in support of uptake and implementation of LOs and LO repositories. Outputs include case studies and reports on a range of technical and process/workflow solutions; structured guidelines; and recommendations for institutional strategy and policy, that will be tested by a wide range of learning communities within a range of use cases. These outputs will be of benefit to the wider FE/HE community, particularly to senior managers and those implementing repositories. There will also be benefits to those engaged in initiatives working with other repository types as the project will collaborate closely with other Repository Programme projects to identify areas where common issues and solutions occur. This project is part of the Enhancing JISC data services for Teaching and Learning project cluster in this particular programme. The main focus of projects in this cluster is to improve use of existing JISC owned resources through the JISC data services for learning and teaching. Through a number of strategic investments by both the JISC and the ESRC, the UK academic community has access to a Collection of Historical and Contemporary Census data and related resources (CHCC) which are available in digital format. Whilst individual data sets are used extensively in research they are significantly under used in learning and teaching programmes within HE. There is clear evidence that the CHCC could be used more widely in learning and teaching programmes. The project will contribute to the DNER and will increase the use of the CHCC in learning and teaching by improving accessibility to the primary data resources; developing an integrated set of learning and teaching materials; improving awareness about the contexts in which Census data can be used in learning and teaching; integrating contextual materials; providing access to Web-based data exploration/ visualisation tools and developing resource discovery tools. The central aim of the project is to develop CHCC into a major DNER learning and teaching resource. The key objectives are to: - Promote increased and more effective use of network based data services for problem based learning and student project work across a broad cross section of learning and teaching programmes; - Develop an integrated Web-based learning and teaching system that links together data extraction and visualisation/ exploration tools with comprehensive learning and teaching resources; - Significantly increase the Census user base by increasing use of the CHCC in learning and teaching; - Build new user communities by promoting increased awareness of the CHCC and its learning and teaching potential; - Improve the productivity of teachers by significantly reducing the overheads required to incorporate; - Census data related resources into learning and teaching programmes; - Improve access to key primary data sources and related resources; - Minimise any delays in getting the key 2001 Census outputs used in learning and teaching. data.gov.uk is a UK Government project to open up almost all non-personal data acquired for official purposes for free re-use. Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt are the two key figures behind the project. The beta version of data.gov.uk has been online since the 30 September 2009 and by January 2010 more than 2,400 developers had registered to test the site, provide feedback and start experimenting with the data. When the project was officially launched in January 2010 it contained 2,500 data sets and developers had already built a site that showed the location of schools according to the rating assigned to them by education watchdog Ofsted. Docusend will contribute to the development of the JISC Information Environment by creating a one-stop document delivery service for handling journal service requests, which is hospitable to being accessed via other portal and broker services. It will support the JISC's aim of integrating access to services by linking document delivery to a number of JISC initiatives to provide seamless access to journal resources from resource discovery through to delivery. Docusend is part of Join-UP, a cluster of four projects (Docusend, zetoc, Xgrain and ZBLSA) which aims to realise the full potential of bibliographic services by informing users about the location of third-party services on the materials referenced therein and the means, where appropriate, to connect automatically to request and delivery mechanisms. Join-UP contributes to the Discover/Locate/Request/Access structure of the Information Environment. The overall aim of the project is to create an accessible, easy to use, one-stop, integrated journal article delivery service. Docusend aims to bring together a wide variety of document delivery and related services in ways that appear transparent and seamless to the user. The objectives are to: Provide seamless access to journals from resource discovery through to delivery Develop the capability to act as a national gateway for document delivery requests Build a consortium of content providers through partnerships and links with a number of suppliers including traditional resource-rich libraries, publishers, the JISC's data services, learned societies, etc; Deliver journal articles in electronic format wherever possible (whether born digital or through electronic delivery of print sources); Test and, if feasible, implement direct end user requesting and end user delivery. endangered archives programme

Endangered Archives Programme aims to contribute to the preservation of archival material that is in danger of destruction, neglect or physical deterioration world-wide. This is achieved principally through the award of grants in an annual competition. The grants provide funding to enable successful applicants to locate relevant endangered archival collections, to arrange their transfer to a suitable local archival home where possible, to create digital copies of the material and to deposit the copies with local institutions and the British Library. This project investigates current and future needs among UKresearch and education community for a more fine-grained authorisation scheme that would allow service providers to take into account of the levels of confidence in identifying a remote entity requesting for service access. Such a fine-grained authorisation scheme is attractive to service providers offering resources with varying levels of sensitivity and/or wishing to tailor their security protections based upon risk levels. first world war poetry

Building on the success of Oxford's Wilfred Owen archive, this multimedia digital archive will contain images, text, audio and video of primary material from five other major British poets of the First World War. The collection will bring together highly valued material, currently dispersed across the UK and the US, on the poets Edward Thomas, Robert Graves, Isaac Rosenberg, Roland Leighton. Among the 2,000 digital images and 200 multimedia objects to be opened up to the public are drafts of Robert Graves's poems for Over the Brazier and Fairies and Fusiliers, as well as an important extract from Goodbye to All That and drafts of Edward Thomas's war poems and diary. St. George's, University of London currently delivers a problem-based learning curriculum for its undergraduate medicine course, which is paper-based, linear and inflexible. This project aims to use recently-developed technologies to assist in the creation of a more interactive and integrated model for curriculum delivery in medicine. The geoXwalk Gazetteer project was originally funded under the Infrastructure programme. The main aim was to develop a demonstrator gazetteer service for the purpose of enhancing geographic searching within the JISC Information Environment. The rationale behind the project is that there is currently no unified entry point to assist in geographic searching within the existing academic network as each information provider /service adopts different geographic coding conventions (some use postcodes, others place names, some grid references etc.) The final Phase V of the project will allow JISC to assess its readiness for transition to service.
