The "Intute in Virtual Learning Environments" (IVLE) project aims to improve access by students and lecturers to high quality Internet resources from the Intute catalogue within the context of two VLEs: Moodle at the University of Bath and Blackboard at the University of Durham. A range of plug-in tools will be developed that will enable both the searching of the Intute catalogue and the delivery of results from within the VLEs. The project will also create some personalisation tools such as the ability to save searches and create lists of favourites for individual use or as reading lists to support course modules. This project is based on a consortium of institutions in Central Scotland (University of Stirling, Falkirk College, Cumbernauld College, Clackmannan College and Lauder College). The project will identify and make available to the FE/HE community learning objects to support students in the acquisition and development of learning and study skills. The project will focus on two particular areas, which are inter-related: adults returning to learning through FE; the transition from FE/HE. The fundamental aim underpinning the project is to provide a coherent range of high quality learning objects that can be used flexibly and in a wide range of different learning contexts to support (adult) learners as they return to learning through FE and all learners making the transition from FE to HE. The University of Aberdeen was founded in 1495. It possesses a number of museum collections of national importance and a wealth of valuable, yet under exploited, educational material. The creation of digital surrogates permits the use of often delicate and irreplaceable items in teaching, particularly to large classes outside the physical museum. Previous experience with creating digital resources for teaching and research has established the methodology for such projects and underscored the University's commitment to working across departments to create interdisciplinary digital resources targeted specifically for use in selected HE teaching areas. The overall aim of the project is to demonstrate the value of university museum and gallery collections in the delivery of teaching and in enhancing the learning process. Access to important material in the collections of the University of Aberdeen will be enhanced for learning and teaching across the HE community. The specific objectives are to provide: Digitised surrogates of material in a linked database suitable for use in HE teaching; Learning packages for students studying specific courses; Digitised resources for use by other courses; Access to users across the HE community. The aim of this project is to implement an open-source reading list system ('List8d') that is accessible and easy to use for all user groups. List8D should also be a useful and sustainable resource for the JISC Information Environment. The project aims to achieve the following technical goals: Portable data with the ability to feed information to and from mashups. Open content and open standards. Solution to be reusable, by any institution, with a well-documented API. Support for tools such as Refworks, Endnote, and Zotero. Internationalisation support. We aim to achieve the following business and user-oriented goals: Help librarians manage their stock levels and serve students better. Be easy for the students to use, with information served by the application accessible in a variety of places. Ideally the students will not be aware of the existence of the application, they will simply see reading lists appearing in appropriate places. Provide accurate information for librarians and library managers, saving time and avoiding unsuitable or inaccurate inputs into the reading list system. Be easy for the academics to use, and help them to ensure that there are sufficient course materials available for the students. Promote agile development practises within the University of Kent. The Mobile Campus Assistant project will make existing campus-related information available to University of Bristol students via their mobiles and location-aware smart phones. By building a prototype, open source mobile smart phone application and a mobile-specific web site the project aims to provide students on the move with a demonstration 'where is my nearest...' service, combining up-to-date information from campus sources (e.g. public PC and room availability, wireless hotspots, directions, timetables) with external public data and services including Google maps and City transport timetables. Based on work to date under D2D, this project aims to develop a demonstrator of `My References'. Through this demonstrator, Copac users would be able to aggregate, tag and annotate resources from all services and maintain them separately in their desired web 2.0 contexts. The user will be able to get an Atom feed of the records they've saved with the long-term potential to manage their collection of records within Copac or a suitable APP client outside of the Copac web site - for instance a VLE, blog, RSS reader, or clients such as Netvibes. The OER Sustainability through Teaching & Research Innovation: Cascading across HEIs (OSTRICH) project, led by the University of Leicester, will transfer and cascade, in usable formats, the key outcomes of Leicester's institutional OER pilot project (OTTER, www.le.ac.uk/otter) to the universities of Bath and Derby. OSTRICH will enable both cascade partners to contextualise key OER lessons learnt, test and transfer OER models, leading to a sustainable approach to OER development and release. 100 credits' worth of OERs in key priority areas will be released by each cascade partner and deposited into the project's own repository and JorumOpen. Stakeholder engagement and benefit will be ensured from day 1 via a robust and realistic workplan, implemented by a highly experienced team with ample OER experience and commitment. The partnership has a track record of delivering on previous successful externally-funded projects. sakai vre portal demonstrator

In this project we will extend the Sakai open source and open standards portal framework. It will host a number of integrated tools and robust distributed services and become the principal user interface for a fully-functional Virtual Research Environment (VRE). To accomplish this, we will seek widespread community input to expose existing tools and services as Java portlets, SOAP-based or peer-to-peer Web services for use within the VRE. Using this approach, the project will create a long-lasting, maintainable and extensible VRE which will provide both reliable collaboration tools, together with a powerful distributed research toolset. Some of the VRE tools and services we want to expose are UK adaptations of those directly available from Sakai and OGCE, the US NMI portal. Others are to be achieved in association with a UK community of VRE users. This project aims to address the requirement for a single point of access to a comprehensive set of Grid and collaboration services in a VRE. To achieve this we have identified, in extensive discussions with the US developers, four areas of framework extension for which the partner sites will take individual reponsibility: Identification, or specification, of an XML grammar for describing collaborative research (Lancaster); A Service Authentication and Authorisation System (Oxford); A JSF-based Web service interface generator (Daresbury); Interface to Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Tools (Portsmouth). These extensions will permit the integration of a wide range of tools, some as part of the Sakai application (using the Java standard JSR-168) and others interfacing to remote services (using a JSF Web service interface or XML standard for remote portlets WSRP). The main benefit of this VRE will be the ease of access to powerful distributed Grid and collaboration tools consistently from one interface. The success of this strategy will be determined by the VRE's level of use. The ease of deployment and integration of tools will also be assessed. Three metrics are proposed to help evaluate the success of the VRE for end users. The first is a single user metric and involves basic log analysis to determine the number of hits per day, measured over the final month of the project. The second involves counting the number of user created worksites and applying a weighting based on the number of users added to the worksite. The third is a collaboration metric and will involve determining the average number of simultaneous users in a Sakai worksite, again averaged out over the final month. Project start date: 2005-02-01. SAMSON seeks to integrate processes for employer engagement which are currently supported across both partner HEIs in numerous, separate pockets of activity, mostly with low levels of use of technology. It will provide a joined-up experience for Nottingham postgraduates on work placements, for employers and employees interacting with the universities for CPD, and for HE staff developing employer engagement activities. The technical developments prioritise re-using working systems and transforming existing data in real time into open standards, moving via web services. Project SECURe (Secure Environment for Certificated Use of Resources) addresses three strands investigating the issues laid out in the JISC call and the wider Sparta requirements for next-generation access management in order to achieve solutions to a range of authentication and authorisation issues, in particular the problems posed by mobile users and the use of shared workstations. Strand 1: Implementation of authorisation to external resources via Shibboleth. This strand will build on work already begun by LSE through the work of the ANGEL project and involvement with the Internet2 Middleware Initiative. Strand 2: An institution-wide deployment of PKI and authentication using personal digital certificates. This will investigate issuing and revocation issues for users of sole use PCs (where the certificate can be held on the PC) and users of public access PCs. Strand 3: Small user group trial of certificate carrying devices such as smartcards and USB devices. This will investigate the general benefits of each device beyond certificate carrying, and the benefits and drawbacks of different device use for the individual user and the institution. The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) and JISC intend to collaborate to deliver a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) impact study on cultural heritage websites. In Canada, CHIN will undertake a case study on SEO in collaboration with 3 Canadian cultural heritage insititutions and in the UK, JISC will also undertake a case study on SEO with 3 organisations. Both JISC and CHIN will use the same methodology and will therefore assess the effectiveness of SEO practices in improving heritage and educational instituions with greater visibility on the Internet. Similarities in findings will help CHIN and JISC identify best practices which can be included in any heritage institution's model. The need for the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) collaboration project was initiated due to the high instance of Internet users accessing information via a search engine. However, many websites, including those within the heritage and education institutional arenas, are not currently constructed to ensure efficient search engine access. As a result, users can fail to find the information they are looking for and organisations can fail to communicate effectively with their user audience. Three case study organisations from the heritage and educational sectors have been selected to take part in the SEO study and as such will allow their website to be optimised through the editing of their content and HTML coding to both increase relevance to specific keywords and remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. silchester roman town

The Silchester Roman Town archaeological excavation is one of the largest Roman sites in the UK. Silchester's principal data collection are contained within the York Archaeological Trust's (YAT) Integrated Archaeological Database (IADB) which is held on a server in Reading, removed from the data collection process in Hampshire and relevant experts at the Universities of Cardiff, Reading, Southampton and Oxford. The types of data involved are extremely diffuse, including numismatics, spatial site plans, matrix information, as well as the full range of data on find types and distribution. The annual excavation period at Silchester comprises eight weeks of intensive data gathering in a tight timeframe and with limited personnel. The site's excavation team has recognised the need for a more fluid and accessible network of human expertise. Many of the experts are geographically dispersed, both from each other, from the site, and from relevant information held elsewhere. This makes the exchange of ideas and interpretations, which are critical to the research process, very cumbersome; a major problem long recognised in field archaeology. This project will provide the basis for a virtual solution to it. The overall aim of the project is to develop a system to facilitate rapidly developing and iterative archaeological research by synchronising the three processes of gathering information, co-ordinating expertise, and managing the resulting body of data. The specific objectives are to: Establish full interoperability between different IADB datasets, wherever they physically reside. Improve real time on-site data gathering including an assessment of the usefulness of handheld PDA devices using wireless networking (WiFi) and/or mobile phone (GPRS) technologies. Develop a structured mechanism for classifying thematic Research Domains or Views, which will operate across servers and across projects. Develop a framework for the creation of real-time online conferences involving both on- and off-site project workers and remote specialists. Project start date: 2004-12-01. The aim of the Shibboleth-aware Portals and Information Environments (SPIE) project is to demonstrate the use of Shibboleth in providing integration between institutional and national information environments, especially via enhanced portals and portlets. The project will build upon the outcomes of earlier nationally-funded projects relating to the development of access management functionality within the JISC Information Environment and instititions, notably the Subject Portals Project (SPP) and the Digital Certificate Operation in a Complex Environment (DCOCE) project. During the next two years the SPIE Project proposes to deliver a combination of evaluation reports, demonstrators, and toolkits as outcomes from investigating the issues related to the integration of access domains. Transferable outcomes from the project also include a Shibboleth-aware Stanford WebAuth Single Sign-on (SSO) authentication mechanism; piloting Shibboleth with AthensSSO; enhanced integration between uPortal and the Subject Portals Project within the context of institutional Single Sign-on, WSRP (Web Services for Remote Portals) and Shibboleth; and access to non-Web resources within a Shibboleth environment. SPIE is located within the Research Technologies Service (RTS) at Oxford University Computing Services (RTS, OUCS). Total Cost of Ownership is a method of identifying and understanding all of the costs associated with the acquisition, use and support of ICT, with the aim of improving decision-making about future ICT investment and deployment. The first UK-based project that looked at TCO in schools was completed by Becta in August 2002. The TCO model quantifies not only the visible costs but makes an assessment of the hidden staff costs where staff are informally supporting the technology and their peers. In addition to an assessment of the inputs, the model assesses a range of outcomes including user satisfaction, service reliability and appropriateness. The purpose of this project, which is being undertaken by Becta, is to develop the school TCO model for use within the FE sector and help colleges to identify and keep track of the detail of the full range of cost factors involved. It will also enable them to maintain an overview on broader issues such as sustainability and best value. The development of an on-line system to support the use of this model will allow all colleges to follow a structured methodology for identifying costs and inputting this information into an online database. A sub-set of this data will form a comparative benchmark database that will allow any college to benchmark their results externally against other colleges and sustainability models, and internally between departments and user groups.
