One of the most talked-about recent developments on the Internet, and the World Wide Web in particular, has come to be known as "Web 2.0" (O'Reilly, 2005), and represents a new approach to using the web as an increasingly interactive platform. This has led to a plethora of "social networking" web sites and applications, where users can, for example, share bookmarks, or add comments or tags to online objects such as photographs or blog posts. The SNEEP project will investigate and demonstrate the extent to which these approaches are relevant to Institutional Repository software, through developing plugins to add commenting, bookmarking and tagging features to Eprints. Overview: SNEEP is a 6 month "rapid development" project to develop extensions adding further key Web 2.0 features to Eprints, and demonstrate their use in an Institutional Repository. This is in part a response to the recent recommendation by Franklin and van Harmeln that projects be undertaken to investigate how institutional repositories can be made more accessible for learning and teaching through the use of Web 2.0 technologies. The project will develop and demonstrate fully working models of web software to incorporate these functions into Eprints, and report on its outcomes and findings. The output will be made openly available for reuse and further development by the community. uk theses digitisation project

Digitising at least 20,000 paper-borne UK theses will 'kick start' the EThOS service, which will allow open access to theses in electronic form. The project will deliver a fully operational, easily scaleable and financially viable prototype of an UK e-theses online service that will enable users, via one single web interface, to access the full text of electronically stored theses after selection from a database of UK theses. UK postgraduate theses are a very important source of primary research output but, says Colin Galloway, project director of EthOs, "There are currently thousands of theses sitting on the shelves of UK academic libraries, many of which will never have been read by anyone other than the author and supervisor. Even in those cases where there is knowledge of their existence there is no easy access to their content, with the result that potentially useful information is disregarded purely because of logistic/bureaucratic impediments." Under this project, 20,000 digitised theses will be freely supplied as open access, enabling all researchers regardless of location or time to search for, identify and order digitised UK theses, a resource which has had limited exposure via the British Library catalogue (metadata only minus abstract) and the commercial subscription Index To Thesis product. The theses will be supplied to researchers as pdfs. The researcher will be able to read the thesis image on his/her computer screen but, by printing the pdf, he or she will get an exact surrogate of the original thesis. By sourcing surrogates from the electronically stored copies, the original paper theses will be accessed less frequently and so will be better preserved. There are around 500,000 paper theses originating from UK Higher Education Institutions and dating from 1730. Although the project is digitising only 1% of the overall total, it will target the most 'popular' - those that are most likely to be requested and supplied to researchers - so the greater impact will be to release EThOS digitisation resources to digitise further theses. The Visual and Sound Material portal (VSM) scoping study and demonstrator project is part of co-ordinating policy for multimedia service provision. The present project is seen as contributing further steps towards a user-lead specification and development of a facility providing a single integrated access point for the range of still-image, moving-picture and sound collections in the JISC IE and beyond. This project will seek to meet programme objectives through exploration of the nature and use of a portal as a means of discovering, locating and accessing time-based content and images for learning, teaching & research. ARCOMEM is a EU-funded research project. It is about memory institutions like archives, museums, and libraries in the age of the Social Web. Memory institutions are more important now than ever: as we face greater economic and environmental challenges we need our understanding of the past to help us navigate to a sustainable future. This is a core function of democracies, but this function faces stiff new challenges in face of the Social Web, and of the radical changes in information creation, communication and citizen involvement that currently characterise our information society (e.g., there are now more social network hits than Google searches). automatic metadata generation

Use cases for the automatic generation and use of metadata will be developed using an approach that maximises the use of current community knowledge. Through knowledge-gathering workshops, commissioned expert reports, and surveys of the wider community it will be possible to identify a number of key use cases defining how metadata can be automatically gathered and how that metadata will be used. This approach builds on existing expertise and allows the focus to be on gathering use cases, analysing them, identifying tools and services, prioritising them, and assessing the main costs and benefits. The project will deliver general guidance for service providers in HE, a synthesis of previous work on automated metadata generation and a set of recommendations on tools and services required in the future. beginners guide to digital preservation

Beginner's Guide to Digital Preservation was created for the JISC by UKOLN as part of a project that ran from April to September 2010. A blog (the JISC Beginners Guide to Digital Preservation project blog) has been written about the process of putting together the guide. The aim of this guide is to provide digital preservation information for members of the JISC community who arenÆt active in the area of digital preservation. The Randall Division of Cell and Molecular Biophysics is a strongly interdisciplinary research division in the School of Biomedical & Health Sciences at King's College London. The Division includes a variety of research groups addressing different topics within this field. The BRIL project aims to enhance the repository facilities at the Randall Division by: o Embedding the repository within the researchers' day-to-day research and experimental practices. o Allowing data and metadata to be captured in automated fashion, for example from equipment or processing and analysis software o Allowing the structure of experimental processes as a whole to be captured, modelled and stored within the repository, rather than just the individual data sets. o Enhancing browse and access facilities so that users can explore and re-use these complex representations, and data exchange facilities to increase interoperability with other repositories in biomedical disciplines. o Integrating the repository into the wider King's infrastructure, and in particular the Institutional preservation practices and policies As well as enhancing this specific repository to address the needs and practices of the targeted research groups, we will also ensure that the architecture and software components produced are sufficiently generic and can be exploited and enhanced in other disciplines and institutions. data.gov.uk is a UK Government project to open up almost all non-personal data acquired for official purposes for free re-use. Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt are the two key figures behind the project. The beta version of data.gov.uk has been online since the 30 September 2009 and by January 2010 more than 2,400 developers had registered to test the site, provide feedback and start experimenting with the data. When the project was officially launched in January 2010 it contained 2,500 data sets and developers had already built a site that showed the location of schools according to the rating assigned to them by education watchdog Ofsted. The aim of this project is to build capacity and skills within psychology postgraduates relating to research data management. The project will build upon existing research data management materials developed by the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) to create discipline-focussed postgraduate training materials that can be embedded into postgraduate research training for the psychological sciences. The materials will consist of: PowerPoint slides to be used in lectures and an associated workbook containing psychology specific guidance on completing the DCC's Data Management Planning Tool (DMPT) (including worked examples), and a copy of the DMPT to be completed by students. The lectures will be structured along the lines of the existing DCC DMPT with the eight key sections forming the centrepiece of six psychology specific lectures of two hours each. Prior to the launch of the training materials the guidance will be transferred to the online DCC Data Management Planning Tool in collaboration with DCC. The training materials will be developed and piloted in the department of psychology at the University of York, in partnership with the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. Other departments within the psychological sciences will be invited to trial the pilot materials before the official launch. Project start date: 2010-08-01. Project end date: 2011-07-31. St. George's, University of London currently delivers a problem-based learning curriculum for its undergraduate medicine course, which is paper-based, linear and inflexible. This project aims to use recently-developed technologies to assist in the creation of a more interactive and integrated model for curriculum delivery in medicine. This will include interactive patient cases which provide students with the opportunity to make realistic decisions and explore the consequences of their actions. The geoXwalk Gazetteer project was originally funded under the Infrastructure programme. The main aim was to develop a demonstrator gazetteer service for the purpose of enhancing geographic searching within the JISC Information Environment. The rationale behind the project is that there is currently no unified entry point to assist in geographic searching within the existing academic network as each information provider /service adopts different geographic coding conventions (some use postcodes, others place names, some grid references etc.) The final Phase V of the project will allow JISC to assess its readiness for transition to service. The Historic Hospital Admission Registers Project (HHARP) is the result of a partnership between Kingston University's Centre for Local History Studies and various hospital archives in London and Glasgow. It began life in 2001 as a project to create a database of late 19th and early 20th century admissions to the Hospital for Sick Children, whose extensive archive is still maintained and housed within the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust. Subsequently, the project was expanded to include three other children's hospitals: the Evelina Hospital (now part of Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Trust), whose records are held at the London Metropolitan Archives; the Alexandra Hospital for Children with Hip Disease (records held at the Museum and Archive Department of St Bartholomew's and the London NHS Trust) and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Glasgow, whose records are held by the hospital. Funding for the project came principally from the Research Resources in Medical History Programme of the Wellcome Trust, with additional financial support from the Friends of Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Nuffield Foundation and the History Research Unit at Kingston University. The Great Ormond Street database was completed and made available in 2007, the databases for the Evelina and the Alexandra Hospital for Children with Hip Disease were made available in early 2010, while that for Glasgow was completed in September 2010. internet public library

The Internet Public Library (IPL, ipl2) is a non-profit, largely student-run website at Drexel University. Visitors can ask a reference question. Volunteer librarians and graduate students in library and information science form collections and answer questions. The IPL opened on March 17, 1995. The IPL originated at the University of MichiganÆs School of Information. Michigan SI students almost exclusively generated its content. They also managed the Ask a Question reference service. Since January 1, 2007 the "IPL Consortium", a group of 15 colleges still including the University of Michigan, has run the IPL. Drexel University's College of Information Science and Technology hosts the site. With a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Drexel intends to additionally use it as a "'technological training center' for digital librarians". IPL2, the new face of the Internet Public Library, results from a merger with the Librarians' Internet Index, previously managed by the Califa Library group. PICTIVA was initiated in part as a response to the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS) user survey of 1998 that identified a number of problems affecting use of online resources. These included a lack of knowledge about what was available or the perceived lack of relevance of online resources to academic users as well as a lack of time to engage with new technologies. The project is a partnership between the VADS based at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College and the Institute for Image Data Research (IIDR) based at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. The tools and systems development will be done with the help of Systems Simulations Ltd (SSL). PICTIVA aims to promote the use of online image collections in learning and teaching in the visual arts by developing a range of generic tools to support access to the images and targeted materials to support their use. The usability of the VADS image database will be improved by providing ease of access to, and navigation of, the image collections held by VADS. The specific objectives are to: Develop tools that will include tutorials on how to use the site effectively as well as look at how the VADS search and retrieval systems can be improved. It will also feature a trial of contents-based image retrieval which will allow users to search VADS images on visual aspects rather than text descriptors; Produce learning and teaching materials based on the collections held by VADS, giving contextual information as well as recognising and incorporating good practice in the design of online learning and teaching resources; Produce case studies which will detail how they have been used in the context of real learning and teaching situations. The core technical deliverable of the project will be the RIOJA tool, which will support automated interactions between journals and public repositories. The tool will be implemented for the arXiv1 subject repository. A demonstrator journal in Astrophysics and Cosmology, using Cornell University's open source DPubS software 2 , interfacing with and overlaid on the arXiv subject repository, will be constructed. The content of the demonstrator journal will be test papers, submitted to and housed on the arXiv server, and the demonstrator will illustrate the use of the RIOJA tool to facilitate the overlay of peer review onto repository content. RIOJA will also explore social and economic aspects of building certification onto repositories in support of the creation of overlay journals. To accompany the demonstration work, the project will carry out a survey of researchers from the field of Astrophysics and Cosmology. It will aim, as part of its exit strategy, to deliver a continuation plan for the demonstrator journal. This will be founded on a cost-recovery business model tested on the Astrophysics and Cosmology community for acceptibility. The continuation plan will include costed recommendations on digital preservation, incorporating learning from the joint UCL-British Library, JISC-funded LIFE project. Project start date: 2007-02-01.
