EBONI identified and compared the various methods in the publication of learning and teaching material on the Web in order to determine the most effective way of representing this information electronically, aiming to maximise usability and information intake by users. An evaluation of texts by an appropriate mix of key stakeholders was undertaken in order to develop guidelines for best practice in the publication of (non-journal) educational material on the Internet. EBONI developed a set of guidelines for publishing educational texts on the Web that reflect the needs of academics and a diversifying population of students throughout the UK. INSPIRAL is a 6-month JISC-funded research project. It is being carried out by the Centre for Digital Library Research (CDLR) and the Centre for Educational Systems4 (CES4), both part of the University of Strathclyde's Information Strategy Directorate. Z39.50 is a computer-to-computer communications protocol designed to support searching and retrieval of information, full-text documents, bibliographic data, images and multimedia in a distributed network environment. Based on client/server architecture and operating over the Internet, the Z39.50 protocol is supporting an increasing number of applications (William Moen, the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 Protocol1). The JISC notes, however, that: 'Z39.50 is of considerable vintage:. and a heavy weight solution which is unattractive to some developers (JISC Circular 5/99). Z39.50 implementations are hampered by the lack of powerful, easy to use, Z39.50-based tools and servers and the need for a high degree of development time. Building on the extensive Z39.50 experience of the Oxford University Libraries Automation Service, the JAFER Toolkit Project will produce a lightweight Z39.50 toolkit specifically aimed for creating Internet based learning and teaching packages. The Resource Discovery Network Subject Portals Project has been developing portal functionality for five of the subject hubs of the Resource Discovery Network (RDN), BIOME, the bio-medical sciences hub; EEVL, the engineering, maths and computer sciences hub; HUMBUL, the humanities hub; PSIGate, the physical sciences hub and SOSIG, the social sciences hub. A subject portal, for the purposes of this project therefore, is a tailored view of the web within a particular subject area, with access to high-quality information resources made easier for the user through aggregated cross searching; streamlined account management; user profiling; and the provision of additional services. YODL complements both the University's research publications held in White Rose Research Online and the digital teaching materials in the Yorkshare Virtual Learning Environment and will help enhance the Library's commitment to delivering a world-class Virtual Library. The Embedding Institutional Data Curation Services in Research (EIDCSR) project seeks to implement selected elements of the digital curation lifecycle by embedding policy, workflow, and sustainability solutions within two 'data rich' research groups. The project will join up existing institutional and departmental services, using an approach that can scale to address the data preservation challenges of research groups that generate, share and reuse research data. The project is an institutional collaboration bringing together research groups, Library and Computing services, and the Research Services Office to curate data by integrating research workflows with the Fedora digital asset management system, long-term file storage, underpinned by policy development. The proposal also has the tangible support of IBM. The project builds on the the range of digital repository activities undertaken by the University, notable the Scoping Digital Repository Services for Research Data Management project, as well as the Bridging the Interoperability Divide (BID) and Building the Research Information Infrastructure (BRII) projects. The project is aligned with the University's commitment to the curation of data produced by its researchers and is consistent with the data management plan and registry proposed for the UK Research Data Service (UKRDS) Pathfinder service. The PORTOLE project aims to produce a range of tools for tutors which will enable them to discover information resources and embed these into their course modules from within a University Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). PORTOLE will produce a set of tools that make it easy for the tutor to discover resources to support an online learning resource, and embed these into the learning environment. A key deliverable will be to produce tools that have been designed with the ease of incorporation into a variety of VLE environments in mind. The overall aim of the project is to produce a range of tools for tutors which will enable them to discover information resources and embed these into their course modules from within a University Virtual Learning Environment. This project aims to address a coherent range of requirements for the more effective management of data (broadly defined) within the Humanities at an institutional level. Whilst the project is fully embedded within the institutional context of Oxford University, the methodologies, outputs and outcomes will be of relevance to other research-led universities, especially but not only, in their support of research within the humanities. The project places emphasis on two particular areas: recognition and support for the 'life's work' nature of much of humanities research; and recognition and support for the simple and effective creation of online databases for typical data-types within the Humanities. This project builds on the results of JISC's eLib Phase 3 programme in the area of resource discovery. It enhances the 'distributed' part of the JISC Information Environment, in that it aims to bring together in a virtual way distributed catalogue to offer richer search and retrieve possibilities for users. This is an example of the JISC vision which states that 'it is not a centralised service and does not rely on a single dedicated entry point'. The primary aims of this project are split into two groups, due to the organisation of the teams carrying out the work. Firstly, M25 and Copac will investigate the feasibility of inter-linking between a very large physical union catalogue and a large virtual union catalogue. A number of issues will be included in this investigation such as comparative speed of searching, de-duplication, results ranking and also comparing the accuracy both of the records themselves and the results. The second area of work undertaken by CAIRNS and RIDING will look at collection level description schemas in relation to both the clumps and Copac. Issues such as target selection in clumps and developing guidelines for cataloguing and indexing practices are also included. The overall purpose of the EThOSnet project is to build a strong EThOS (Electronic Theses Online Service) sponsorship network amongst the HE community and to achieve a high level of technological and organisational sustainability for a successful move from prototype to 'live' service. Objectives: Extend the EThOS partnership and encourage 'early adopters' - this will require stepping up the advocacy campaign initiated by the EThOS project and putting in place a highly visible 'sign-up' process with a view to achieving a sufficient level of buy-in to ensure future viability; Increase the number of e-theses already available in the EThOS prototype, thus enhancing UK repository content by significantly increasing its critical mass and extending its scope to material that is currently poorly represented in digital repositories; Enhance the procedural infrastructure and upgrade the EThOS Toolkit accordingly with a view to improving institutional workflows in close partnership with registry and academic staff and to addressing the HE community's concerns, identified by the independent evaluation, regarding the management of third-party rights and the detection of plagiarism; Scale up the EThOS technological infrastructure for the move from prototype to 'live' status; Monitor and test relevant technology trends in order to identify those technologies which EThOS may be able to adopt in the future to improve further the management of e-theses and consolidate the embedding of the service within institutional practices. Heron provides a service for UK academic institutions that wish to provide online access to student readings. Increasingly students today are working part time or are distance learners. They often study off campus and want quick and easy access to learning materials. Higher and Further Education Institutions are responding by providing access to electronic texts and developing virtual learning environments (VLEs). Heron primarily deals with book and journal extracts. It has developed a resource bank of over 2.5 million digitised extracts for rapid re-use (subject to copyright permissions). linkedup project

The LinkedUp Project is a FP7 Support Action which pushes forward the exploitation and adoption of public, open data available on the Web, in particular by educational organisations and institutions. To address these goals, LinkedUp provides a range of activities, including the establishment of the LinkedUp Challenge and a corresponding evaluation framework. These are aimed at identifying and promoting innovative success stories which exploit large-scale Web data in educational scenarios as part of robust applications and tools. The project is made up of consortium partners each with respective roles in the LinkedUp project. There are also a number of associated partners with an interest in the project. Linking Parliamentary Records through Metadata (LIPARM) project is designed to allow for the first time the federated searching and browsing of UK and Ireland Parliamentary papers by defining and implementing a unified metadata strategy for historical and contemporary parliamentary digitisation projects. This project defines a generic XML schema for parliamentary metadata, defines controlled vocabularies for key components of this metadata, and produces a platform for a union catalogue of these materials based on the records created. The project will implement an ingest service based on the OAIS reference model for institutional archives built using Eprints software. Working with the National Archives, the project will link Eprints through a Web service to PRONOM software for identification and verification of file formats. The project will emphasise automation, will provide modular tools for capturing metadata and will enable the identification and verification of file formats. The project will scope a technology watch service to populate and update PRONOM where full automation is not feasible for file format recognition. This ingest service will be integrated into the Eprints deposit process for two existing institutional archives, at Southampton and Oxford Universities for evaluation, subject to prior satisfactory testing on pilot archives. The British Library and Southampton University will build and test an exemplar OAI-based preservation service. This service could be used with any OAI-compatible preservation archive to create a software-independent preservation archive. This project will work with other JISC approved projects in the JISC 4/04 programme and other JISC programmes to create institutional responsibility for preservation planning, data management, archival storage and administration, to effectively build a network of distributed and cooperating services that are based on the OAIS digital preservation reference model. Ontologies and taxonomies will define and describe data objects (eg people, research groups, funding agencies, publications, research 'themes') to forge connections between them and provide web-based services to disseminate and reuse this information in new contexts.
