This project will set up an open access digital repository at the University of York for resources in a variety of formats, including sound, archives, film and images, to complement both the University's research publications in the White Rose Research Online repository and the digital teaching materials in the University's Yorkshare VLE. SAFIR will investigate both open source and commercial software options to determine which is most appropriate for the range of formats and requirements identified by the project, and which conforms to current standards for interoperability within the JISC Information Environment. The project is part of a larger activity to develop a digital library service for the University of York that will contribute to the University strategy for storage, preservation, retrieval and dissemination of digital assets. SageCite will develop and test a Citation Framework (Data, Method, Publication) for complex network models of disease and associated data as Research Objects, with requirements informing a demonstrator using Taverna workflows, DataCite services as an extension to myExperiment and Sage Commons data infrastructure, as the case study. Citations of network models will be embedded in two leading publications: Nature Genetics and PLoS Computational Biology. A Benefits Evaluating mapping will be produced using the KRDS2 Benefits Taxonomy. SageCite will join up JISC RDM with the international bio-informatics initiatives: Concept Web Alliance and Bio2RDF. schema.org

Schema.org is an initiative launched on 2 June 2011 by Bing, Google and Yahoo!to "create and support a common set of schemas for structured data markup on web pages." On 1 November Yandex (whose search engine is the largest one in Russia) joined the initiative. They propose using their schemas and Microdata in HTML5 to mark up website content with metadata about itself. Such markup can be recognized by search engine spiders and other parsers, thus gaining access to the meaning of the sites. The initiative started with a small number of formats, but the long term goal is to support a wider range of schemas. The initiative also describes an extension mechanism for adding additional properties. Much of the vocabulary on schema.org was inspired by earlier formats such as Microformats, FOAF, GoodRelations and OpenCyc. RDF applications can use Microdata2RDF service. The UK federation for Access Management now has over one hundred member organisations and is on track to satisfy the original goal of providing a next generation access management solution for UK education and research. The user base envisaged for the UK federation is at least an order of magnitude greater than that of the next biggest national deployment of Shibboleth in a federation. As such the technology is both of key strategic importance for UK education and research and leading-edge, therefore of need for careful risk management. The UK is heavily dependent upon both access to a stable codebase for the Shibboleth framework and upon establishing and maintaining a development path which is aligned to UK future requirements. Shibboleth, however, is not a UK development; it is essential that the UK maintains indigenous expertise in the technology to guarantee the security of service provision and maintenance. ShareGeo will integrate the geospatial data sharing facility of the GRADE demonstrator repository into the EDINA Digimap Collections suite of services for use by registered Digimap users. As part of the 2005 Digital Repositories' Programme, JISC funded the scoping of a geospatial repository for academic deposit and extraction (GRADE) project. GRADE investigated a number of issues relating to the role repositories including developing a demonstrator repository. This project will build upon the work of the demonstrator GRADE repository and will implement a facility within the EDINA Digimap Collections suite of services that will allow registered Digimap users to share and re-use derived geospatial datasets. The project will build upon the work previously done for the GRADE project while implementing the facility using the latest version of the DSpace software and later versions of supporting libraries such as for validating spatial datasets. As well as technical developments there will be work done on clarifying the data deposit and download policy and improved help provided to users. The project output will be a facility accessed from within Digimap that allows users to deposit and extract (i.e. share) geospatial datasets. UK terrestrial broadcast radio and television provides much material of value to further and higher education learning and teaching. Since May 1990, all UK HEIs have been recording programmes legitimately under Section 35 of the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 and some academic libraries hold thousands of such recordings. There are, however, a significant number of gaps that when combined make tracing and accessing copies of broadcasts more difficult than it should be: radio has generally been ignored; relevant television programmes may have been overlooked; general programme output has not been catalogued and indexed from a learning and teaching perspective; different institutions catalogue according to different rules; and access to catalogues and recorded materials may be restricted. TRILT will address these gaps by providing in-depth data on television and radio broadcasts with the opportunity for relating this to other subject information through the DNER. TRILT will also assist in the integration of moving images and sound in learning and teaching, including providing the foundation for the online delivery of encoded sound and moving images. The specific objectives are to: Install within the DNER a fully searchable index and guide to all major English language radio and television channels receivable in the UK, including regional variations. It will also carry additional content including reviews, bibliographic information, still images and other information. It will be provided five days in advance of transmission and archived with the added data being improved both pre- and post-transmission Offer the opportunity to integrate moving image metadata sources and delivery services available to FE and HE ; Provide a framework which will create opportunities for direct connection to moving image sources to be streamed online or for delivery via physical media where connectivity/traffic issues impede online supply; Provide links to sources of film and/or video copies of programmes post-transmission, including non-theatrical distributors of video and sound recordings and the BUFVC's Off-Air Recording Back-Up Service; Provide links to commercial publishing partners; Indicate related moving image material available in analogue or encoded digital form. xpert

The XPERT (Xerte Public E-learning ReposiTory) project is an 18 month project to explore the potential of delivering and supporting a distributed repository of e-learning resources created and seamlessly published through the open source e-learning development tool called Xerte Online Toolkits (XOT). The project will empower academic authors at partner institutions to easily create open access learning resources and help foster a culture of sharing teaching and learning resources. The University of Nottingham has a well established commitment to open access content, demonstrated through the JISC funded projects such as SHERPA1 and OpenDOAR2, as well as the creation of one of the first Open Courseware initiatives in the UK (U-Now3). This project will build on this commitment and will be led by The University of Nottingham with core partners, University of Bolton and JISC TechDIS. In addition, the project team will remain open to other HE and FE institutions contributing to the XPERT project at a later stage as XOT deployments grow, and will continue to inform the wider community of XOT users worldwide. All partners are early adopters of XOT and keen to deploy this e-learning development tool in order to facilitate learning content creation and publishing to support the development of an open distributed architecture, sharing e-learning resources and providing a common information and communications environment. Through providing guidance and advice it will benefit the whole of the UK sector by exploring issues raised in the wider take-up and development of an open distributed e-learning repository in HEIs. The Arts and Humanities e-Science Initiative was jointly funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and JISC. The Initiative aimed to enable research practitioners to embed the advanced use of ICT in their research and teaching practices. It will also facilitated collaboration across traditional subject and discipline boundaries. The Content Lifecycle Integration Framework (CLIF) project will examine the management of the lifecycle of digital content from creation through to disposal or preservation across system boundaries. It will carry out this examination through the integration of the Fedora digital repository system with two other systems used within the HE sector in the UK and abroad, Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) and Sakai, to enable the movement of content between them at specific points in its lifecycle, in accordance with identified use case requirements: a preliminary investigation of integration between MOSS and Sakai will also be undertaken. All three systems are used to manage digital content, and each addresses different overlapping parts of the content lifecycle. Integration will use a loosely coupled, open standards-based approach to maximise re-use outside the project. CLIF will include a research strand, investigating the content lifecycle and how systems can best support this, and a technical development strand to carry out the integration work informed by the research. This proposal is to support management and business professionals in university departments and related organisations who are the essential links between research and commerce, i.e. they are engaged in managing the process of Knowledge exchange. These groups develop best practice in management and liaise with other stakeholders such as the Regional Development Agencies. CRIB focuses on their requirements, and demonstrates how a Virtual Research Environment can be extended to include management research and practice with tools enabling more effective collaboration, sharing of information and accelerating their progress through the research lifecycle. Our key challenge is to provide a Web-based VRE platform using existing tools to enhance collaboration. This platform will support the opportunity for staff in business and management schools to change their relationships both with each other and with the groups they support. The project has chosen Sakai as it is already familiar to users at the partner institutions and the project partners already have experience of enhancing the current tools in Sakai. Examples of this enhancement include further development and integration of tools such as the Sakai Profile-2 tool and BRII. Other tools are required to help change the relationships staff have with on-line scholarly information, such as the use of the CREE cross search tool, and to enhance the use of such information as a fundamental part of the Knowledge Exchange agenda. VLEs have proved to be useful tools in facilitating staff in organising educational resources and activities in a hierarchical structure representing the structure of Programmes and Units. While they are excellent vehicles for delivery of materials, they are not ideal mechanisms for the management and curation of materials. There is an urgent need for a repository which focuses on the educational process and the storage, retrieval and sharing of educational materials which can be used to populate VLEs. The University of Southampton has taken the strategic decision to develop a repository for educational materials using its own well-established EPrints research repository software as the mechanism. The aim is to use a co-design process approach both to specify and to implement the details of the system which will be deliverable and sustainable. This will extend and embed the EPrints software within the educational domain. In doing so, the project will develop a richer understanding of processes of institutional change and integration at both a strategic and discipline level. Project start date: 2007-11-01. endangered archives programme

Endangered Archives Programme aims to contribute to the preservation of archival material that is in danger of destruction, neglect or physical deterioration world-wide. This is achieved principally through the award of grants in an annual competition. The grants provide funding to enable successful applicants to locate relevant endangered archival collections, to arrange their transfer to a suitable local archival home where possible, to create digital copies of the material and to deposit the copies with local institutions and the British Library. We will also be working in partnership with Eduserv, Talis and OCLC, leading experts within their fields. The Archaeology Data Service was established to collect, describe, catalogue, preserve, and provide user support for digital resources that are created as a product of archaeological research. The ADS is primarily funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board5 and JISC and is part of the Arts and Humanities Data Service. Since the establishment of its online catalogue in September 1998, the ADS has begun to build rich collections of quality digital data for use in learning, teaching and research. These include the first national and regional Sites and Monuments Records to be made available via the Internet, full-scale digital excavation archives and the archaeological components of rich inter-disciplinary data sets complementing data held by its sister AHDS service providers. The use of these collections is expanding rapidly. The ADS places a high priority on raising awareness of the potential use of digital data held by the ADS within the further and higher education sectors and is developing a programme of visits to FECs and HEIs, but while these visits are important, they are no substitute for the use of ADS resources within the core syllabus. The ADS recognises that there is great potential for developing electronic tutorials based on existing licensed data sets that would enhance and expand their use within the DNER for learning and teaching. Electronic tutorials would be used by ADS staff, but could also be delivered by the staff of home institutions. The overall aim of the project is to increase the use of digital data available within the DNER, specifically that held by the ADS and the AHDS, by the further and higher education archaeological community. The project aims to develop electronic tutorial packs to promote the use of ADS resources within the core syllabus being delivered by FE and HE institutions. The specific objectives are to: Produce four web-based tutorial packs covering aspects of use of monument inventories, excavation archives, electronic publications and inter-disciplinary datasets Enrich users' understanding of the analysis and use of primary archaeological electronic resources Implement the four electronic tutorial packs initially in six Higher Education Institutions Present a framework for the use of primary archaeological electronic resources in teaching and learning Enhance the ADS data collections as part of the DNER. User Behaviour in Resource Discovery (UBiRD) analyses information-seeking behaviour of students and researchers working in the Business and Economics disciplines using subscribed and freely available Internet resource discovery systems in three UK HE institutions: Cranfield University, London School of Economics and Middlesex University. The final report provides an understanding of (i) how different users (undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers) currently seek information on the existing resource discovery systems, (ii) the roadmap used in a user’s information seeking journey, and (iii) their expectations and needs based on their understanding and experience of using the Internet to find information resources for academic study. The report also includes several recommendations to publishers and librarians that will help improve the user experience as well as help e-resources be discovered and used.

Analysing Raptor at Kent (ARK) is a project adopting the production version of the Raptor toolkit and using it to improve our understanding of the demand for and use of electronic journals and databases, by the staff and students of the University of Kent. Raptor reports allow assessment of the usage of each Academic school, which can use this data to ensure provision of resources appropriate to the needs of users and to improve internal charging models. The project builds on the work of the successful Raptor pilot programme at Kent. The pilot established the viability of running a pre-release version of the Raptor toolkit, on the UniversityÆs servers. This pilot also made a preliminary assessment of management overheads, software reliability, response times, support costs and the usefulness of Raptor reports to the needs of the Library and IT services. Building on the British Library's ground-breaking work in creating the first online fully-searchable digital library of sound recordings from one of the world's treasure houses of audio heritage, these nine new digital collections will make available around 4,200 hours of audio content. The recordings, which range from canonical classical repertoire to interviews with Holocaust survivors, will be supported by images and added value features to enhance the existing service and transform teaching, learning and research. The British Library Archival Sound Recordings (ASR) 2 draws once again on the wealth and diversity of the library's audio holdings. The nine collections chosen for this e-resource reflect the broad remit of the archive, covering field recordings, music recordings and oral history to name just three, but they also provide deeper tranches of content to complement the current ASR collections. The Sony Radio Awards news and current affairs material builds on the Sony Radio Awards radio drama package included in the first ASR project to deepen the online resource documenting UK radio broadcasting. The Decca West African recordings further enrich the three Africa-related packages already available in the resource, while the historic recordings of canonical classical repertoire complement the archive of recorded performances of Beethoven String Quartets included in the first project. Each of the collections contains material which is unique or not easy to access elsewhere. By deepening the critical mass of archival audio material for online access, the service meets the needs of many more users. It also increases the visibility of audio content in the digital domain and its availability for repurposing to teachers, researchers and lifelong learners. Project start date: 2007-01-01.
