CPAN, the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network, is an archive of over 20,000 modules of software written in Perl, as well as documentation for it. It has a presence on the World Wide Web at www.cpan.org and is mirrored worldwide at more than 200 locations. CPAN can denote either the archive network itself, or the Perl program that acts as an interface to the network and as an automated software installer (somewhat like a package manager). DMP Online has been produced by the UK's Digital Curation Centre to help research teams respond to a recommendation in Lyon (2007) that "Each funded research project should submit a structured Data Management Plan for peer-review as an integral part of the application for funding." It draws upon the DCC's analysis of funders' requirements to help project teams in creating up to three iterations of a data management plan; the first ('minimal') plan for use at the grant application stage, a second ('core') version which is developed at the early-project stage and maintained throughout the project lifecycle, and a third ('full') plan which addresses issues of long-term preservation and access. docusend

Docusend will contribute to the development of the JISC Information Environment by creating a one-stop document delivery service for handling journal service requests, which is hospitable to being accessed via other portal and broker services. It will support the JISC's aim of integrating access to services by linking document delivery to a number of JISC initiatives to provide seamless access to journal resources from resource discovery through to delivery. Docusend is part of Join-UP, a cluster of four projects (Docusend, zetoc, Xgrain and ZBLSA) which aims to realise the full potential of bibliographic services by informing users about the location of third-party services on the materials referenced therein and the means, where appropriate, to connect automatically to request and delivery mechanisms. Join-UP contributes to the Discover/Locate/Request/Access structure of the Information Environment. The overall aim of the project is to create an accessible, easy to use, one-stop, integrated journal article delivery service. Docusend aims to bring together a wide variety of document delivery and related services in ways that appear transparent and seamless to the user. The objectives are to: Provide seamless access to journals from resource discovery through to delivery Develop the capability to act as a national gateway for document delivery requests Build a consortium of content providers through partnerships and links with a number of suppliers including traditional resource-rich libraries, publishers, the JISC's data services, learned societies, etc; Deliver journal articles in electronic format wherever possible (whether born digital or through electronic delivery of print sources); Test and, if feasible, implement direct end user requesting and end user delivery. ibvre

The JISC-funded IBVRE project is developing a large-scale Virtual Research Environment demonstrator to investigate the use of existing collaboration frameworks to support the entire research process of a large-scale, international research consortium, namely that of the Integrative Biology (IB) project. IB is a second-round EPSRC e-Science Pilot project developing a Grid infrastructure to support post-genomic research in Integrative Biology. Integrative approaches to biology are rapidly evolving and characterised by the attempt to understand biological systems through the construction of large-scale software systems that simulate biological behaviour at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. These in silico experiments, as they are known, increasingly demand larger and more powerful resources, both in terms of data storage and computation; the primary aim of the IB project is to meet these needs by constructing a Grid infrastructure to provide tailored, seamless access to these vital facilities. The overall aim of the IBVRE project is to extend the IB infrastructure to become a VRE for computational biology. This single, integrated environment will support the entire research process in its widest sense, including identification of research area, building and managing projects and consortia, disseminating results, experimental and simulated data generation acquisition, analysis and curation, access to IT, HPC and experimental resources, administration, and provision of training to new researchers entering the field (learning and teaching support tools). itunes u

Tunes U was announced at Cupertino, California on May 30, 2007. The service was created to manage, distribute, and control access to educational audio and video content and PDF files for students within a college or university as well as the broader Internet. The member institutions are given their own iTunes U site that makes use of Apple's iTunes Store infrastructure. The online service is without cost to those uploading or downloading material. Content includes course lectures, language lessons, lab demonstrations, sports highlights and campus tours provided by qualifying two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public or private colleges and universities in the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom. An advantage iTunes U has over traditional podcasting tools is that access to content can be restricted because of the use of the iTunes infrastructure end-to-end. Authentication is handled by member college and university who prompts a visitor for information (like an account and password specific to that institution) and then passed a token onto the iTunes U site that contains the access level for that visitor. mobile campus assistant

The Placement Learning and Assessment Toolkit project acknowledges that practice-based learning and the mentoring process would be improved with tools which allowed on-the-spot entry of results of assessments, such that feedback was given and follow-up actions were decided immediately. The project aims to provide a mobile learning toolkit to support practice-based learning, mentoring, and assessment, and to add mobile assessment tools to the e-framework. The project will develop a 'back office' infrastructure to support the deployment of the proposed toolkit and two selected tools. Phase 1 development comprises toolkit analysis, design, and implementation, followed by pilot and evaluation within a simulated environment based in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Phases 2 and 3 involve the application and implementation of the toolkit within real clinical contexts associated with the University of Southampton Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care located within the Health Care Innovation Unit, Thames Valley University, and Bournemouth and Poole College. myexperiment

myExperiment is an open source Web 2.0 repository solution for the born-digital items arising in contemporary research practice. Carefully tailored to the needs of researchers, myExperiment makes it really easy to discover, use, store, share and curate items, to build communities and to form relationships. The myExperiment Repository Enhancement Project is building on this success to deliver an enhanced repository which is coupled seamlessly with EPrints at University of Southampton and the eScholar institutional repository at The University of Manchester (a customised version of Fedora). During the enhancement project we are evolving Packs into more sophisticated "Research Objects" which support replayable, repeatable, reproducible, reusable, repurposable and reliable research. We believe that in the future the sharing of such Research Objects will enhance and ultimately replace the sharing of academic publications in research practice. Project start date: 2009-04-01. repositories research team

As part of the Digital Repositories and Repositories and Preservation Programmes, JISC have established the Repositories Research Team. The remit for the work of the research team is quite wide and includes helping projects find and exploit synergies across the programme and beyond, gathering scenarios and use cases from projects, liaising with other national and international repositories activities, including liaison with the e-Framework, synthesizing project and programme outcomes, and engaging with interoperability standards activity and repository architectures. The Repositories Research Team is a collaboration between UKOLN and JISC CETIS. UKOLN have worked previously on repositories in a number of contexts including ePrints UK, the Open Archives Forum and Delos, and JISC CETIS, the JISC Centre for Educational Technology and Interoperability Standards, has considerable experience in supporting the development of digital repositories for e-learning. stargate

The Stargate project, based at the Centre for Digital Library Research at the University of Strathclyde, will explore the use of static repositories as a means of exposing publisher metadata to OAI-based disclosure, discovery and alerting services within the JISC IE and beyond. Static repositories were developed as an alternative to fully fledged OAI-compliant repositories and have been implemented successfully within the Open Language Archives Community as a means of widening participation in OAI-based systems and services. The project builds on the successful use of static repositories by HaIRST project in JISC's FAIR programme. It also builds on the technical architecture developed by Heriot Watt University in their PALS I project OAI-compliant metadata repository for a specialist publisher of e-journals. The project's primary aim will be to lower the technical barriers to the implementation of OAI-compliant repositories, thereby enabling small publishers of electronic resources to participate more readily in OAI-based disclosure and delivery services within the JISC IE and beyond. Specifically, it will implement a series of static repositories of publisher metadata, demonstrate the interoperability of the exposed metadata through harvesting and cross-searching via a static repository gateway, and conduct a critical evaluation of the static repository approach with publishers and service providers. The project has two key objectives to: build an interoperability demonstrator based around the static repository gateway developed in the HaIRST project and dovetailing with the OAI-based architecture developed in PALS I; develop tools and guidelines that will facilitate the implementation of static repositories by small publishers that wish to expose their metadata to OAI-based services. digital preservation training programme

This project aims to develop a modular training programme in digital preservation, with class-taught, online and off-line components. It meets the needs identified in the recent JISC-funded study, carried out by Cornwell Management Consultants, into training needs in digital preservation. It builds on existing exemplars of training and information provision, including the NEH-funded Cornell University digital preservation course, the DPC's travelling 1-day workshop, the "Preservation Management of Digital Materials" handbook, and training from existing JISC-funded services such as AHDS. The training will be developed at multiple levels, to meet the needs of senior managers as well as practitioners and new staff. By including self-paced material as well as taught components and group exercises, it will provide information in a way suited to all who might require it. With the backing of the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC), the course can be made available outside the JISC community, bringing in revenue which will aid the long-term sustainability of the project's outputs. The National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) is an archival program led by the Library of Congress to archive and provide access to digital resources. The U.S. Congress established the program in 2000. The Library was chosen because of its mission to "sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations," and also because of its role as one of the leading providers of high-quality content on the Internet. The Library of Congress has formed a national network of partners dedicated to preserving specific types of digital content that is at risk of loss. In July 2010, the Library launched a National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) to extend the work of NDIIPP to more institutions. NDSA has several is developing improved preservation standards and practices; working with experts to identify categories of digital information that are most worthy of preservation; and taking steps to incorporate content into a national collection. The OMNI Project developed a database of Internet resources in medicine, biomedicine, allied health, health management and related topics. This gateway provided comprehensive coverage of UK resources in the area and access to the best resources worldwide, using a process of selection, evaluation and description. project gutenberg

Project Gutenberg, abbreviated as PG, is a volunteer effort to digitize and archive cultural works, to "encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks." Founded in 1971 by Michael S. Hart, it is the oldest digital library. Most of the items in its collection are the full texts of public domain books. The project tries to make these as free as possible, in long-lasting, open formats that can be used on almost any computer. As of November 2010, Project Gutenberg claimed over 34,000 items in its collection. Project Gutenberg is affiliated with many projects that are independent organizations which share the same ideals, and have been given permission to use the Project Gutenberg trademark. homer multitext

The Homer Multitext project, the first of its kind in Homeric studies, seeks to present the textual transmission of the Iliad and Odyssey in a historical framework. Such a framework is needed to account for the full reality of a complex medium of oral performance that underwent many changes over a long period of time. These changes, as reflected in the many texts of Homer, need to be understood in their many different historical contexts. The Homer Multitext provides ways to view these contexts both synchronically and diachronically. Using technology that takes advantage of the best available practices and open source standards that have been developed for digital publications in a variety of fields, the Homer Multitext offers free access to a library of texts and images, a machine-interface to that library and its indices, and tools to allow readers to discover and engage with the Homeric tradition. mobile internet detective

The Intute Internet Detective is already positioned as an extremely popular, well respected online tutorial, helping the user to assess the academic validity of websites. The project intends to build on the existing service by extending its reach to include mobile users, who, as the mobile Internet has developed, have come to expect higher standards when browsing on their handsets. The needs and behaviour of a mobile surfer differs greatly from a desktop surfer, so 'The Mobile Internet Detective' will deliver a user friendly mobile site that is fast and inexpensive to load, providing the right content, presented in the right order and with an adapted layout. The BVREH is a project supported by the Humanities Division at Oxford, hosted by the Oxford e-Research Centre, and funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), which promotes the innovative use of information and communications technology in academic teaching and research in the UK. An initial survey carried out by the BVREH team between June 2005 and September 2006 defined the range of services that a Virtual Environment should offer - from information about researchers and their interests and about conferences, lectures and seminars, to integrated communication and collaboration tools to support advanced research. The project team addressed the needs highlighted by the survey through a number of pilot applications designed for specific user communities with the long term aim of broadening their functionality to a wider humanities user base. Through a number of previous workshops with the language teachers community of practice we have noted two important lessons: 1. The community is eager to share their resources and wants a lightweight repository that they can incorporate into everyday practice. 2. Practitioners are enthusiastic about sharing learning assets: simple resources such as videos, audio files and presentations. There is a real need for a straightforward usable repository that fulfils these requirements in order to begin to explore the difficult issues concerning authorship, provenance, authority and copyright in the context of a real system with real users. Aims and objectives: - To build on our existing engagement with the languages community to provide the type of lightweight community repositories that they are asking for, and bootstrap their individual use of repositories for exchanging learning assets. We will: - Deploy a lightweight repository early in the project lifetime and engage directly with the community throughout the project to encourage the sharing of assets; - Develop official plug-ins for ePrints to enable Web 2.0 functions such as tagging and virtual structures - Provide a number of bootstrap activities to support the community in identifying, uploading and describing their learning assets. first world war poetry

Building on the success of Oxford's Wilfred Owen archive, this multimedia digital archive will contain images, text, audio and video of primary material from five other major British poets of the First World War. The collection will bring together highly valued material, currently dispersed across the UK and the US, on the poets Edward Thomas, Robert Graves, Isaac Rosenberg, Roland Leighton. Among the 2,000 digital images and 200 multimedia objects to be opened up to the public are drafts of Robert Graves's poems for Over the Brazier and Fairies and Fusiliers, as well as an important extract from Goodbye to All That and drafts of Edward Thomas's war poems and diary. This project will firstly be scoping and developing an application profile for images. This would support the effective management and deposit of Images within a repository which would then aid consistency in retrieval. The project will need to build consensus in this area, to agree (with the community) an optimum solution, and then to develop an application profile with the associated guidelines. The project will also need to develop and implement a community acceptance plan to promote take-up and embedding for the deliverables and to address continued take up (sustainability). rdmrose

RDMRose is a JISC funded project producing taught and continuing professional development (CPD) learning materials in Research Data Management (RDM) tailored for Information professionals. RDMRose develops and adapts learning materials about RDM to meet the specific needs of liaison librarians in university libraries, both for practitionersÆ CPD and for embedding into the postgraduate taught (PGT) curriculum. Its deliverables include OER materials suitable for learning in multiple modes, including face to face and self-directed learning. RDMRose brings together the UKÆs leading iSchool with a practitioner community based on the White Rose University ConsortiumÆs libraries at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. Development of content and teaching will be iterative, based on a highly participative curriculum development process and with a strong strand of student evaluation of learning materials and activities.
