A major output from these projects has been the development of a portal interface, a Web site that users could come to in order to make use of the functionality that the portal provided, particularly searching. Each project, as a key part of its investigations, created its own such interface and Web site.

issue45 feature article chris awre ian dolphin jon allen jon hunter matthew dovey stewart waller ahds d-lib magazine edina google ibm jisc oasis oracle oxford university computing services university of edinburgh university of hull university of oxford university of york cree jafer libportal wikipedia aggregation apache api cataloguing content management data file format framework geospatial data gis html infrastructure interoperability intranet java managed learning environment open source perl portal repositories schema search technology software standards stylesheet uportal url vle web portal web services wsrp xml xml schema xslt z39.50 Sat, 29 Oct 2005 23:00:00 +0000 editor 1185 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Developing Portal Services and Evaluating How Users Want to Use Them: The CREE Project http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue41/awre-cree

Chris Awre, Matthew J Dovey, Jon Hunter, William Kilbride and Ian Dolphin describe the JISC-funded Contextual Resource Evaluation Environment (CREE) Project and its user and technical investigations to examine how users wish to use library search services.

The JISC-funded PORTAL Project [1] examined and established which services users wished to have made available through an institutional portal. The VLE in use at the Universities of Leeds and Oxford is the Bodington system. A key deliverable of the project was to produce tools that were designed with the ease of incorporation into other VLE environments in mind.

issue38 feature article matthew dovey mina sotiriou tracey stanley google ims jisc microsoft university of leeds university of oxford dner jafer jisc information environment portole algorithm bibliographic data cataloguing data database digital library dublin core e-learning google search html information architecture infrastructure internet explorer java marc marc21 metadata multimedia open source openurl portal resource discovery schema scripting language search technology software sql sql server standards subject gateway vle web resources xml xml schema xslt z39.50 Fri, 30 Jan 2004 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1006 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk So You Want to Build a Union Catalogue? http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue23/dovey

Matthew Dovey looks at various models of virtual union catalogues in addition to those adopted by the clump projects, and other models of physical catalogues.

In the not so distant past, if a group of libraries wished to offer a single online catalogue to their collections, they had to adopt a physical union catalogue model: i.e. they would have placed their catalogue records into a single searchable database. More recently there has been much work in virtual union catalogues, whereby the user interface offers integrated access to multiple catalogues as if they were a single catalogue. Neither of these approaches is a panacea, however – both have certain pros and cons, which makes the decision of which to adopt dependent on circumstances.

issue23 feature article matthew dovey oclc university of oxford elib aacr2 algorithm archives bath profile bibliographic data cataloguing copac data database information retrieval opac research search technology software standards url z39.50 Thu, 23 Mar 2000 00:00:00 +0000 editor 676 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk RDF Seminar http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue15/events/stakis.html

Matthew Dovey reports on the RDF seminar held in the Stakis Hotel, Bath.

On the 8th May, following almost immediately after their MODELS 7 Workshop, UKOLN hosted a half-day seminar entitled “RDF: What is it all about?”.
