We use application profiles as a way of making sense of the differing relationship that implementors and namespace managers have towards metadata schema, and the different ways they use and develop schema. The idea of application profiles grew out of UKOLN's work on the DESIRE project <a href="#1">(1)</a>, and since then has proved so helpful to us in our discussions of schemas and registries that we want to throw it out for wider discussion in the run-up to the DC8 Workshop in Ottawa in October.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue25/app-profiles" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue25 feature article manjula patel rachel heery d-lib magazine ieee ukoln university of bath w3c dner application profile bath profile cataloguing collection description controlled vocabularies data data model data set database dcmes dcmi digital library dublin core dublin core metadata initiative e-learning framework identifier ieee lom infrastructure learning object metadata learning objects lom marc metadata namespace rdf rdfs research resource discovery rslp rss schema search technology software standards url vocabularies xml xml schema z39.50 Sat, 23 Sep 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 728 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Interoperability: What Is It and Why Should I Want It? http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/interoperability <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue24/interoperability#author1">Paul Miller</a> explains what interoperability is and why you should want it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>Together with terms like "metadata" and "joined-up thinking", this word is increasingly being used within the information management discourse across all of our memory institutions. Its meaning, though, remains somewhat ambiguous, as do many of the benefits of "being interoperable". This paper is an attempt, written from the doubtless biased perspective of someone with the word in their job title, to explain some of what interoperability means, and to begin stating the case for more active efforts towards being truly interoperable across a range of services.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/interoperability" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue24 feature article paul miller jisc microsoft ordnance survey ukoln university of hull university of oxford dner elib archives bath profile cataloguing data dissemination dublin core dublin core metadata initiative e-government foi framework geospatial data gis ict identifier intellectual property interoperability intranet mailbase metadata portal repositories research resource discovery search technology software thesaurus url video vocabularies z39.50 Thu, 22 Jun 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 699 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Search Engines: The Relevance of Underpants to Searching the Web http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/search-engines <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue24/search-engines#author1">Phil Bradley</a> explores search engine ranking techniques.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>In the courses that I run on Internet searching people often express concern, surprise or plain puzzlement at the way in which search engines relevance rank the results that they return.
