This paper discusses that question and suggests a number of ways in which DNER strategy and thinking can be informed by hybrid library developments. ‘Suggests’ is the word, since there is currently an investigation underway that is dealing with this question which is still to report. This is being coordinated by Stephen Pinfield, one of the authors of this article.

issue26 feature article lorcan dempsey stephen pinfield becta jisc national science foundation oclc ukoln university of birmingham university of nottingham agora archives hub dner eevl elib jisc information environment sosig archives authentication bibliographic data collection description collection development copac data data set database digital library digital preservation framework further education geospatial data gis higher education infrastructure ldap library management systems open archives initiative personalisation preservation research resource discovery search technology semantic web sfx standards url web resources z39.50 Wed, 10 Jan 2001 00:00:00 +0000 editor 748 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk A Policy Context: eLib and the Emergence of the Subject Gateways http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue25/subject-gateways

Derek Law and Lorcan Dempsey outline some of the features of the policy environment which led to the setting up of the influential 'subject gateways' as part of the UK Electronic Libraries Programme (eLib).

This brief paper outlines some of the features of the policy environment which led to the setting up of the influential 'subject gateways' as part of the Electronic Libraries Programme. It has the modest and partial ambition of putting some of the discussions of the time on record. It should be read as a companion piece to two other articles. The first, Law 1994, develops the historical context for the emergence of the data centres, a central component of JISC information infrastructure, and collaterally discusses the broad thrust of JISC's developing informational activity.

issue25 feature article derek law lorcan dempsey british library cni coalition for networked information d-lib magazine ietf jisc kings college london tasi ukoln university of bath university of bristol university of strathclyde dner eevl elib jisc information environment sosig archives bibliographic data cache cataloguing copac copyright data data set digital object identifier digitisation framework higher education identifier infrastructure interoperability portfolio research resource discovery software url Sat, 23 Sep 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 723 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Meta Detectors http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue3/metadata

Lorcan Dempsey talks about metadata and the development of resource discovery services in the UK.

How do you find out what is of interest on the network? The answer is with difficulty. What should libraries and the eLib subject services be doing about this? The answer is not clear. Let's postpone the question for a while, and look at the rapidly shifting service and technical environment in which they are operating.

issue3 feature article lorcan dempsey jisc oclc university of kent university of oxford eevl elib ihr-info jisc information environment niss sosig aggregation archives bibliographic data cataloguing data database dissemination framework higher education html identifier java licence marc metadata repositories research resource discovery rtf search technology udc z39.50 Sat, 18 May 1996 23:00:00 +0000 editor 73 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk
