Historically speaking, data were a scarce resource, but one which was (relatively) easy to publish in hard copy, as tables or graphs in journal papers. With modern scientific methods, and the increased ease in collecting and analysing vast quantities of data, there arises a corresponding difficulty in publishing this data in a form that can be considered part of the scientific record.

issue68 feature article david walton roy lowry sarah callaghan badc british antarctic survey british library british oceanographic data centre codata datacite jisc ncas royal meteorological society science and technology facilities council claddier ojims archives ascii cataloguing cd-rom curation data data citation data management data set digital curation digital repositories doi dspace dublin core e-science framework geospatial data google scholar guid higher education html identifier infrastructure internet explorer interoperability library data metadata open access rdf repositories research schema standards uri url vocabularies xml Fri, 09 Mar 2012 14:06:59 +0000 lisrw 2223 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Overlay Journals and Data Publishing in the Meteorological Sciences http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue60/callaghan-et-al

Sarah Callaghan, Fiona Hewer, Sam Pepler, Paul Hardaker and Alan Gadian introduce the OJIMS Project and discuss the impact of overlay and data journals in the meteorological sciences.

Historically speaking, scientific publishing has focused on publicising the methodology that the scientist uses to analyse a dataset, and the conclusions that the scientist can draw from that analysis, as this is the information that can be easily published in text format with supporting diagrams. Datasets do not lend themselves easily to normal hard copy publication, even if the size of the dataset were small enough to allow this, and datasets are more useful stored in digital media.

issue60 feature article alan gadian fiona hewer paul hardaker sam pepler sarah callaghan badc jisc ncas royal meteorological society university of leeds claddier ojims rioja accessibility archives blog data data set database digital media framework identifier infrastructure metadata multimedia open access open source podcast repositories research search technology software video web 2.0 wiki Wed, 29 Jul 2009 23:00:00 +0000 editor 1487 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Workshop on E-Research, Digital Repositories and Portals http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue49/escience-lancaster-rpt

Rob Allan, Rob Crouchley and Caroline Ingram report on a two-day workshop held at University of Lancaster over 6-7 September 2006

issue49 event report caroline ingram rob allan rob crouchley cclrc dcc edina google intute jisc mimas oai sherpa uk data archive university college london university of hull university of lancaster university of leeds university of nottingham university of oxford university of southampton claddier digimap iesr jisc information environment opendoar r4l romeo api archives browser data database digital curation digital repositories digitisation dissemination e-learning e-research e-science framework geospatial data gis identifier infrastructure institutional repository intellectual property internet explorer interoperability java metadata oai-pmh portal preservation rae repositories research resource discovery rss search technology service registry tagging uddi uportal usb virtual research environment web 2.0 web services wsrp Mon, 30 Oct 2006 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1280 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk The Rustle of Digital Curation: The JISC Annual Conference http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue47/jisc-conf-rpt

Julie Allinson, Marieke Guy and Maureen Pennock find themselves contemplating e-frameworks, digital curation and repositories at the JISC Annual Conference.

On 14 March 2006 we found ourselves back at the Birmingham International Convention Centre (ICC) for the 2006 JISC Conference.
