This is UKOLN's loss, but a great plus for the DNER. Ray Lester, head of UKOLN's management committee, points out that Lorcan:</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/editorial" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue24 editorial philip hunter cni jisc ukoln university of bath university of oxford w3c agora dner elib archives database digital library framework further education higher education html identifier interoperability metadata resource discovery sgml standards tei url xml z39.50 Thu, 22 Jun 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 698 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Interoperability: What Is It and Why Should I Want It? http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/interoperability <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue24/interoperability#author1">Paul Miller</a> explains what interoperability is and why you should want it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>Together with terms like "metadata" and "joined-up thinking", this word is increasingly being used within the information management discourse across all of our memory institutions. Its meaning, though, remains somewhat ambiguous, as do many of the benefits of "being interoperable". This paper is an attempt, written from the doubtless biased perspective of someone with the word in their job title, to explain some of what interoperability means, and to begin stating the case for more active efforts towards being truly interoperable across a range of services.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/interoperability" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue24 feature article paul miller jisc microsoft ordnance survey ukoln university of hull university of oxford dner elib archives bath profile cataloguing data dissemination dublin core dublin core metadata initiative e-government foi framework geospatial data gis ict identifier intellectual property interoperability intranet mailbase metadata portal repositories research resource discovery search technology software thesaurus url video vocabularies z39.50 Thu, 22 Jun 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 699 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Text Encoding for Interchange: A New Consortium http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/tei <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue24/tei#author1">Lou Burnard</a> on the creation of the TEI Consortium which has been created to take the TEI Guidelines into the XML world.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) was originally established in 1987 with the goal of creating a community-based standard for text encoding and interchange.
