In this article we hope to offer an insight into the development of the Video Active Portal [1] which provides access broadcast heritage material retained by archives across Europe. We will explain how Video Active needed to find solutions for managing intellectual property rights, semantic and linguistic interoperability and the design of a meaningful user experience.

issue53 feature article johan oomen vassilis tzouvaras apple google iso mpeg national technical university of athens netherlands institute for sound and vision oai royal holloway university of london university of utrecht w3c api archives data data management database digital archive digital library digitisation dublin core dublin core metadata initiative dvd flash framework hypertext ict information architecture infrastructure intellectual property interoperability itunes java jena learning objects metadata multimedia mysql oai-pmh ontologies open archives initiative open source owl portal preservation rdf rdfs repositories research resource description schema search technology semantic web sesame sparql standardisation standards streaming thesaurus video vocabularies web app web services windows windows media xml xml schema youtube Tue, 30 Oct 2007 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1348 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk What Are Your Terms? http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue43/johnston

Pete Johnston introduces the JISC Information Environment Metadata Schema Registry (IEMSR) Project and examines some of the challenges it is facing.

The JISC Information Environment Metadata Schema Registry (IEMSR) Project [1] is funded by JISC through its Shared Services Programme to develop a metadata schema registry as a pilot shared service for the JISC Information Environment (JISC IE). We use application profiles as a way of making sense of the differing relationship that implementors and namespace managers have towards metadata schema, and the different ways they use and develop schema. The idea of application profiles grew out of UKOLN's work on the DESIRE project (1), and since then has proved so helpful to us in our discussions of schemas and registries that we want to throw it out for wider discussion in the run-up to the DC8 Workshop in Ottawa in October.

issue25 feature article manjula patel rachel heery d-lib magazine ieee ukoln university of bath w3c dner application profile bath profile cataloguing collection description controlled vocabularies data data model data set database dcmes dcmi digital library dublin core dublin core metadata initiative e-learning framework identifier ieee lom infrastructure learning object metadata learning objects lom marc metadata namespace rdf rdfs research resource discovery rslp rss schema search technology software standards url vocabularies xml xml schema z39.50 Sat, 23 Sep 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 728 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk
