The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) and JISC intend to collaborate to deliver a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) impact study on cultural heritage websites. In Canada, CHIN will undertake a case study on SEO in collaboration with 3 Canadian cultural heritage insititutions and in the UK, JISC will also undertake a case study on SEO with 3 organisations. Both JISC and CHIN will use the same methodology and will therefore assess the effectiveness of SEO practices in improving heritage and educational instituions with greater visibility on the Internet. Similarities in findings will help CHIN and JISC identify best practices which can be included in any heritage institution's model. The need for the Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) collaboration project was initiated due to the high instance of Internet users accessing information via a search engine. However, many websites, including those within the heritage and education institutional arenas, are not currently constructed to ensure efficient search engine access. As a result, users can fail to find the information they are looking for and organisations can fail to communicate effectively with their user audience. Three case study organisations from the heritage and educational sectors have been selected to take part in the SEO study and as such will allow their website to be optimised through the editing of their content and HTML coding to both increase relevance to specific keywords and remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Project start date: 2009-02-06. Project end date: 2009-06-22. (Excerpt from this source)
