An object database (also object-oriented database management system or OODBMS) is a database management system in which information is represented in the form of objects as used in object-oriented programming. Object databases are a niche field within the broader database management system (DBMS) market dominated by relational database management systems. Object databases have been considered since the early 1980s and 1990s, but they have made little impact on mainstream commercial data processing, though there is some usage in specialized areas.
