Only 15 years ago, the (university) library decided what sources should be offered to the staff and individual scientists could only hope the librarian would listen to their wishes. In this system scientists frequently had no instantaneous access to the information they wanted. In such instances they had to rely on the Interlibrary Loan System.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue61/hogenaar" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue61 feature article arjan hogenaar bbc elsevier oai royal netherlands academy of arts and sciences surffoundation university of groningen w3c escape project preserv aggregation archives atom content management data data model data set didl digital curation digital preservation e-research e-science fedora commons foaf frbr identifier infrastructure institutional repository interoperability linked data metadata oai-ore oai-pmh ontologies open access open archives initiative preservation rdf repositories research search technology semantic web tagging uri url video vocabularies web application web resources xml Fri, 30 Oct 2009 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1509 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk The DARE Chronicle: Open Access to Research Results and Teaching Material in the Netherlands http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue53/waaijers <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue53/waaijers#author1">Leo Waaijers</a> reflects on four years of progress and also looks ahead.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>While Cream of Science (Keur der Wetenschap), Promise of Science and the HBO Knowledge Bank (HBO Kennisbank) are among the inspiring results of the DARE Programme for the period 2003-06, what is more important in the long run is the new infrastructure that enables Dutch Higher Education and research institutions to provide easy and reliable open access to research results and teaching material as quickly as possible. With this in view, a project called Cream of Science was initiated in the summer of 2004. One of the prime aims of Cream of Science is to unlock top quality content to the scientific community and make it more easily and digitally accessible.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue45/vanderkuil" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue45 feature article annemiek van der kuil martin feijen cni coalition for networked information google jisc leiden university oai royal netherlands academy of arts and sciences tilburg university university of utrecht digital academic repositories sherpa archives blog copyright data database dspace google scholar identifier infrastructure institutional repository metadata oai-pmh open access open archives initiative repositories research search technology software standardisation standards thesaurus Sat, 29 Oct 2005 23:00:00 +0000 editor 1188 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Virtual Research Environments: Overview and Activity http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue44/fraser <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue44/fraser#author1">Michael Fraser</a> provides an overview of the virtual research environment (VRE) and introduces three JISC-funded projects in which Oxford University is participating.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>Virtual research environments (VREs), as one hopes the name suggests, comprise digital infrastructure and services which enable research to take place.
