The international WWW conferences provide an opportunity for the Web research community to describe their research activities. Other tracks at the conference cover areas such as cultural resources, e-learning, accessibility, etc. In addition W3C (the World Wide Web Consortium) gives a series of presentations which describe many of the new Web standards being developed.

issue36 regular column brian kelly cerlim manchester metropolitan university ukoln university of bath university of southampton w3c web accessibility initiative accessibility avi browser copyright css data dom dtd e-learning foaf higher education html mathml metadata rae rdf research semantic web smil standards stylesheet svg url video visualisation vocabularies wcag web application web browser web development web services web standards xhtml xml Tue, 29 Jul 2003 23:00:00 +0000 editor 975 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Web Focus: Let's Get Serious about HTML Standards http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue33/web-focus

Brian Kelly encourages authors to treat compliance with HTML standards seriously.

If you talk to long-established Web authors or those responsible for managing large Web sites or developing Web applications intended for widespread use in a heterogeneous environment you are likely to find that the need for compliance with Web standards is well-understood.

issue33 tooled up brian kelly apple ibm microsoft ukoln university of bath w3c web accessibility initiative accessibility adobe archives browser content management cookie dtd higher education html internet explorer interoperability linux mathml microsoft office namespace open source openoffice software standards url utf-8 web application web browser web development web resources web standards windows xhtml xml xslt Wed, 09 Oct 2002 23:00:00 +0000 editor 916 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Web Focus: Hot News From WWW10 http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue28/web-focus

Brian Kelly reports on the Tenth International World Wide Web Conference, held in Hong Kong on 1-5 May 2001.

Previous Web Focus articles have provided trip reports on the International World Wide Web conferences [1] [2] [3] and [4]. The 1,200+ delegates were very appreciative of the air-conditioning in the Hong Kong Conference Centre, located on Hong Kong island, next to the harbour (see Figure 1).

issue28 tooled up brian kelly ibm microsoft ukoln university of bath w3c adobe apache archives content management css e-learning framework hypertext interoperability microsoft office mobile multimedia namespace open source open standard operating system png rdf research semantic web smil software streaming svg url video web application web services web standards wireless application profile xhtml xlink xml xml namespaces xpointer xsl Thu, 21 Jun 2001 23:00:00 +0000 editor 810 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Web Focus: HTML is Dead! http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue27/web-focus

HTML is Dead: Brian Kelly explains why this is, and why it is a good thing.

HTML is Dead?

Previous Web Focus articles have reported on developments which have been the featured prominently in International World Wide Web conferences. I attended the conference in my capacity as the JISC representative on the W3C (the World Wide Web Consortium).

About 1,800 people attended the conference. This figure was down on the last two years, due possibly to the close proximity of other conferences - the Javasoft conference attracted about 8,000 delagates and the Microsoft Hardware Engineering conference about 15,000 delegates. Both of these conference took place the week before the WWW 6 conference.

issue9 tooled up brian kelly ibm iso jisc microsoft ukoln university of bath w3c adobe browser cache database dom dtd gif html internet explorer java javascript multimedia search technology sgml software usability utf-8 web application xml Sun, 18 May 1997 23:00:00 +0000 editor 326 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk
