Guyda Armstrong is Senior Lecturer in Italian Studies at the University of Manchester. She specialises in medieval Italian literature, especially Boccaccio, and its diffusion and reception across languages and cultures from the medieval period to the present day. She now works primarily in the field of the history (and the future) of the book, with an interdisciplinary approach which combines textual and material studies, with translation and the digital humanities.

She has a long-standing research interest in the digital humanities and their application to literary studies. From 2001-3 she was Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Early Modern Italian and New Media at Brown University, USA, working on the NEH-funded Decameron Web site and its successor, the Virtual Humanities Lab. She is the Principal Investigator for the Manchester Digital Dante project, a British Academy Project which digitised culturally significant editions of Dante's Divine Comedy held in the University of Manchester's Special Collections.

She was also lead academic on the award-winning Jisc-funded SCARLET Project (Special Collections using Augmented Reality to Enhance Learning and Teaching), which developed a mobile app to allow students to integrate iconic material from the University's special collections into their learning and teaching.

Her book The English Boccaccio: A History in Books is forthcoming with the University of Toronto Press in 2013, and she is one of the editors of the forthcoming Cambridge Companion to Boccaccio. She is also one of the co-organisers of the 2013 Boccaccio anniversary events in the UK, which include a major exhibition and international conference at the John Rylands Library, Manchester, with associated events at the British Library and Institute for Germanic and Romance Studies in London.

Marieke is particularly interested in issues around openness in education (open data, open access, open science, open assessment) and online communication - hence her recent move to the Open Knowledge Foundation. where she is working on the LinkedUp Project.

During her 13 years at UKOLN she has been involved with a number of interesting projects and ventures. Her last 2 years were spent as an Institutional Support Officer for the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) working towards raising awareness and building capacity for institutional research data management.

Prior to this she worked on community and outreach projects including IMPACT, QA Focus, Jisc Observatory, Greening events and UKOLN cultural heritage activities. She also project-managed ePrints UK, Subject Portals Project, JISC Standards Catalogue, immersiveInformatics and Good APIs.

For 7 years Marieke co-organised the Institutional Web Management Workshop (IWMW) series of events with Brian Kelly. The event was designed for those involved in the provision of institutional Web services and offered a test bed for innovative event amplification approaches.

Marieke was the remote worker champion at UKOLN ensuring that the UKOLN remote workers were included in UKOLN activities and integrated into UKOLN culture. Marieke continues to write a blog on cultural issues, organisational attitudes and useful technologies related to remote working.

Jean Vacher’s main area of personal research has been the history, culture and identity of the Balkan people in the early part of the 20th century, viewed through their textiles. Key research methods have used material culture held in public collections including that of the Crafts Study Centre (CSC), the archives of such bodies as the Royal Institute of Anthropology and other primary and secondary sources relating to this area of interest. She would like to extend these methods to other cultures where these have been represented in the CSC’s practitioner’s reference collections.

In 2007 she successfully completed a UCA-funded research trip to Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia where she visited public collections and met with curators to document their collections in relations to those of the CSC’s holdings. Jean has since delivered three public lectures; two in Stroud (Stroud International Textile Festival and The Museum in the Park) and the other for Farnham Textile Group highlighting the cultural connections between historic Balkan textiles held in public collections in the UK and evidence gathered during her research trip. She is in the process of writing up her research for an article for possible publication.

Neil Jefferies, MA, MBA is Research and Development Project Manager for the Bodleian Libraries, responsible for the development and delivery of new projects and services. Simon Choppin is a sports engineering researcher at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research at Sheffield Hallam University, where he specialises in impact dynamics, high-speed video and data modelling. His PhD at Sheffield University investigated tennis racket dynamics and involved working with the International Tennis Federation.

In 2006 he developed a novel 3D method of racket and ball tracking, which was used at a Wimbledon qualifying tournament. His subsequent paper, presented at the Tennis Science and Technology Conference 2007, was awarded the Howard Brody Award for outstanding academic contribution.

Simon is also a keen science communicator and has taken part in several high-profile events promoting the image of science and technology. He was awarded a British Science Association Media Fellowship in 2009 and worked with the Guardian newspaper for four weeks. As well as pursuing his research interests he works on a large project employing neural network and genetic algorithm optimisation techniques. He edits and contributes to the CSER blog, Engineering Sport.

Ugne Lipeikaite is working with EIFL on research study of perceptions of public libraries in Africa as well as follow-up activities to raise awareness of the potential of public libraries targeted at decision makers. She is also leading impact planning and assessment activities of a national wide library public access computing project in Lithuania, funded by Global Libraries Programme of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Her field of experience includes ICT diffusion and adoption projects, eInclusion initiatives and development of impact assessment frameworks for ICT- related projects and programmes.
