For the first time, they had access to a Web-based union catalogue of resources in accessible formats and information about the producers and suppliers of these materials. Until that point there had been no single place which provided information accessible by everyone; in effect, these people were second-class citizens in the information world. Revealweb has not solved all the problems.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue44/chapman" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue44 feature article ann chapman bbc british library mla rnib ukoln accessibility archives ascii bibliographic data bibliographic record cataloguing collection description copyright data database lcsh library management systems licence marc metadata national library personalisation rslp schema search technology software standards wireless z39.50 Fri, 29 Jul 2005 23:00:00 +0000 editor 1163 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk ISBN-13: New Number on the Block http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue41/chapman <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue41/chapman#author1">Ann Chapman</a> outlines the planned changes to the ISBN standard and its impact on the information community and the book trade.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique machine-readable identification number, defined in ISO Standard 2108, which is applied to books. As a result of electronic publishing and other changes in the publishing industry, the numbering capacity of the ISBN system is being consumed at a much faster rate than was originally anticipated when the standard was designed in the late 1960s. While we will not run out of ISBNs tomorrow, it will happen before too long and plans are already in hand to provide a solution before the crisis point is reached.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue41/chapman" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue41 feature article ann chapman british library iso library of congress niso ukoln bibliographic data bibliographic record cataloguing collection description content management copyright data database digital object identifier doi dublin core ebook identifier information retrieval learning objects marc metadata resource discovery search technology software standards url z39.50 z39.88 Fri, 29 Oct 2004 23:00:00 +0000 editor 1078 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Tap Into Bath http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue40/baud-chapman <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue40/baud-chapman#author1">Alison Baud</a> and <a href="/issue40/baud-chapman#author2">Ann Chapman</a> describe the development of a database of archive, library and museum collections in Bath.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>Since 1999, when it was first proposed to use metadata for collection-level description within the Research Support Libraries Programme (<a href="http://www.rslp.ac.uk/">RSLP</a>) [<a href="#1">1</a>], there has been steadily growing interest in this new method of supporting resource discovery. They have relied to a great extent on specialist voluntary organisations transcribing a limited range of materials into accessible formats. This situation is changing with advances in technology and recent initiatives on social inclusion. Increasingly visually impaired people will be able to locate and use information independently, as sighted people already do.</p> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue24/in-vision" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue24 feature article ann chapman bbc british library cerlim ibm ifla library association library of congress manchester metropolitan university rnib ukoln university of bath w3c isle project gutenberg web accessibility initiative accessibility archives ascii bibliographic data browser cataloguing cd-rom copyright data database digital audio file format further education graphics html ict internet explorer java linux metadata multimedia national library ocr opac operating system optical character recognition perl portal repositories research resource discovery search technology software standards url video Thu, 22 Jun 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 701 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Metadata: Cataloguing Theory and Internet Subject-based Information Gateways http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue18/metadata <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue18/metadata#author1">Ann Chapman</a>, <a href="/issue18/metadata#author2">Michael Day</a>, and <a href="/issue18/metadata#author3">Debra Hiom</a> compare library cataloguing concepts and ROADS Template creation.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue18/metadata" target="_blank">read more</a></p> issue18 regular column ann chapman debra hiom michael day british library ifla ilrt iso oclc ukoln university of bath university of bristol university of essex elib sosig aacr2 adobe archives bibliographic data cataloguing data database dublin core framework html identifier isbd java lcsh marc medical subject headings metadata mobile research resource description resource discovery search technology software standards subject gateway subject heading thesaurus video Sat, 19 Dec 1998 00:00:00 +0000 editor 568 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk The BNBMARC Currency Survey http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue6/performance <div class="field field-type-text field-field-teaser-article"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="/issue6/performance#author1">Ann Chapman</a> describes the BNBMARC Currency Survey, a performance measurement survey on the supply of bibliographic records.</p> </div> </div> </div> <p>Performance measurement has been used as a research tool for many years, and as such has been used in some of the studies undertaken by UKOLN and its predecessor bodies (the Centre for Catalogue Research - CCR, and the Centre for Bibliographic Management).
