This year the computer scientists, librarians and all those in-between travelled to Philadelphia in Pennsylvania for ACM Digital Libraries '97 [1]. The conference, from 23-26 July, took place in the Doubletree Hotel [2] in downtown Philly and was co-located with the more technical SIGIR '97 [3].

issue11 event report david nichols bbc british library carnegie mellon university d-lib magazine ibm stanford university university of arizona elib algorithm bibliographic data copyright database digital library hypertext interoperability licence metadata multimedia research search technology software video windows Thu, 18 Sep 1997 23:00:00 +0000 editor 402 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk SIGIR '97 http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue11/sigir97

David Nichols reports on the follow-on conference SIGIR '97.

SIGIR is a well established technical conference and a little daunting for those hangers-on from Digital Libraries '97 who did not have a background in information retrieval. It was good, therefore, that the opening Salton Award lecture by Tefko Saracevic of Rutgers University made us feel at home with a talk entitled Users Lost. He described the history of the field and, what he felt, was a split in the early 80s between the technical algorithm-based side and the user-oriented side.

issue11 event report david nichols british library oclc princeton university rutgers university university of california berkeley university of glasgow algorithm data database digital library information retrieval lexical database medical subject headings metadata research search technology visualisation wordnet Thu, 18 Sep 1997 23:00:00 +0000 editor 403 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk A Thread of Ariadnes http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue2/many

One of my previous lecturers jokingly said that once you had a title, logo and an acronym for your project, 80% of the work was done. Except I'm not so sure she was joking, now. Ariadne took (relatively) little time to be decided on as a title, but as it turned out, many other projects around the world, and one in particular in the UK, shared this greek mythological name. This has caused problems; for example, lists of digital libraries/training projects occasionally get us mixed up with the Ariadne project at Lancaster.
