them, an urgent need has been identified for a standard way of expressing and communicating usage terms, and linking those terms to the publications.

Reflecting the development pattern of the markets, this need was first identified in the scholarly journals sector. More recently, a similar requirement has been articulated for the communication of usage terms between publishers' digital repositories and search engines such as Google.

issue50 feature article brian green david martin francis cave cranfield university editeur google jisc loughborough university niso university of washington data digital library digital media digital repositories ejournal framework interoperability licence metadata onix onix-pl ontologies research resource management schema search technology standards xml xml schema Tue, 30 Jan 2007 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1290 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Take a Peek Beneath the EPrints V3 Wrappers http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue50/eprints-v3-rpt

With v3 officially launched at the Open Repositories Conference in San Antonio last week, William Nixon and Peter Millington report on the EPrints 3 pre-launch briefing in London, 8 December 2006.

issue50 event report peter millington william nixon google jisc oai university of glasgow university of nottingham university of southampton romeo sherpa zetoc apache api archives atom bibliographic data data database digital library dspace dublin core eprints flash gif google maps javascript ldap metadata mets multimedia mysql quicktime refworks repositories research rss search technology software usability video wiki windows xml Tue, 30 Jan 2007 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1298 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk News and Events http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue50/newsline

Ariadne presents a brief summary of news and events.

Technical Advisory Service for Images (TASI) Training Programme

Either: Birmingham, Bristol or London, 8 February to 27 April 2007
http://www.tasi.ac.uk/training/

The TASI programme of practical hands-on training includes three brand new workshops:

issue50 news and events richard waller british library cerlim cilip google intute jisc london school of economics manchester metropolitan university mla oai royal netherlands academy of arts and sciences simon fraser university stanford university tasi ukoln university college dublin university of bristol university of edinburgh university of london university of manchester university of wales university of york internet archive iwmw jisc information environment accessibility ajax apache application profile archives atom bibliographic data blog cataloguing copyright data data set database digital curation digital repositories digitisation dissemination dublin core electronic theses firefox free software geospatial data gis higher education ict infrastructure intellectual property internet explorer interoperability licence lucene marc metadata multimedia namespace oai-pmh ontologies open access open data open source photoshop preservation privacy repositories research rss search technology software standards syndication tagging taxonomy url video web 2.0 web development web services youtube Tue, 30 Jan 2007 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1299 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Book Review: Google Hacks http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue50/bradley-rvw

Phil Bradley looks at a work offering programming 'know-how' to create resources that will do things with the search engine that might otherwise prove difficult or impossible.

The subtitle for the book is 'Tips and tools for finding and using the world's information' which does neatly sum up its content. As with any O'Reilly title, it is very clearly laid out, easy to read, with extremely good illustrations, small icons to indicate tips or notes of caution, plus an in-depth and thorough index. Each hack is clearly indicated by typography, an icon and the top corner of each page indicates the numbered hack.

issue50 review phil bradley google oreilly google maps html javascript perl python search technology web 2.0 Tue, 30 Jan 2007 00:00:00 +0000 editor 1302 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk
