These forms are usually the front ends to <a href="http://www.w3.org/pub/WWW/CGI/">Common Gateway Interface (CGI)</a> programs that implement such things as webopacs, electronic ILL requests and access to backend databases. Often these FORMs have to be authenticated to ensure that only valid library users can make use of the services. The word is increasingly to be found bandied about amongst the Web <i>cognoscenti</i>, but what exactly is it, and is it something that can be of value to you and your work? This article aims to explore some of the issues involved in metadata and then, concentrating specifically upon the Dublin Core, move on to show in a non-technical fashion how metadata may be used by anyone to make their material more accessible.
