We use application profiles as a way of making sense of the differing relationship that implementors and namespace managers have towards metadata schema, and the different ways they use and develop schema. The idea of application profiles grew out of UKOLN's work on the DESIRE project (1), and since then has proved so helpful to us in our discussions of schemas and registries that we want to throw it out for wider discussion in the run-up to the DC8 Workshop in Ottawa in October.

issue25 feature article manjula patel rachel heery d-lib magazine ieee ukoln university of bath w3c dner application profile bath profile cataloguing collection description controlled vocabularies data data model data set database dcmes dcmi digital library dublin core dublin core metadata initiative e-learning framework identifier ieee lom infrastructure learning object metadata learning objects lom marc metadata namespace rdf rdfs research resource discovery rslp rss schema search technology software standards url vocabularies xml xml schema z39.50 Sat, 23 Sep 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 728 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk
