In excess of two hundred people attended coming from 34 countries around the world. As always it was a busy conference with many parallel strands to choose between. It suggests providing partial OpenURLs using the DC Identifier, Source and Relation elements together with an associated 'OpenURL' encoding scheme. It summarises the relevance of this technique to support reference linking and considers mechanisms for providing richer bibliographic citations. A mapping between OpenURL attributes and Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) [3] elements is provided.

issue27 regular column andy powell ann apps cornell university d-lib magazine iso mimas niso ukoln university of bath university of manchester bibliographic data browser cookie database dcmes dcmi digital object identifier doi dublin core dublin core metadata initiative html identifier metadata namespace openurl research resource discovery schema search technology sfx software standardisation standards url vocabularies web browser xhtml Fri, 23 Mar 2001 00:00:00 +0000 editor 780 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Metadata: Preservation 2000 http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue26/metadata

Michael Day reports on the Digital Preservation conference held in York in December 2000.

The Cedars conference, "Preservation 2000: an International Conference on the Preservation and Long Term Accessibility of Digital Materials," was held at the Viking Moat House Hotel in York on 7-8 December 2000. We use application profiles as a way of making sense of the differing relationship that implementors and namespace managers have towards metadata schema, and the different ways they use and develop schema. The idea of application profiles grew out of UKOLN's work on the DESIRE project (1), and since then has proved so helpful to us in our discussions of schemas and registries that we want to throw it out for wider discussion in the run-up to the DC8 Workshop in Ottawa in October.

issue25 feature article manjula patel rachel heery d-lib magazine ieee ukoln university of bath w3c dner application profile bath profile cataloguing collection description controlled vocabularies data data model data set database dcmes dcmi digital library dublin core dublin core metadata initiative e-learning framework identifier ieee lom infrastructure learning object metadata learning objects lom marc metadata namespace rdf rdfs research resource discovery rslp rss schema search technology software standards url vocabularies xml xml schema z39.50 Sat, 23 Sep 2000 23:00:00 +0000 editor 728 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk
