Lecturers often have very little time to spend surfing the 'Net to find useful resources for course materials and teaching, or to help their students develop Internet skills. Students can lack the skills, confidence or ability to use the Internet effectively for their study, especially given that the Internet is not exclusively about education, containing many materials that are completely inappropriate for coursework or study.

issue38 feature article emma place british library google ilrt jisc university of bristol sosig cataloguing database e-learning ebook further education higher education ict research resource discovery search technology software subject heading Fri, 30 Jan 2004 22:02:16 +0000 admin 1684 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Planet SOSIG: Regarding Collaboration, Conferences and Courses http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue35/planet-sosig

Alejandro Fernandez introduces a new collaborative initiative between the RDN and LTSN, Emma Place reports from the BPS Annual Conference and Neil Jacobs presents a new course for social researchers in Government.

SOSIG and LTSN Collaboration Project

On March 11th, representatives from the social science-related LTSN Subject Centres sat down with SOSIG staff to kick off a collaboration project that has the grand goal of maximising the use of Internet resource descriptions and information created for the UK social science community by sharing cataloguing responsibilities and tasks.

issue35 regular column alejandro fernandez emma place neil jacobs ilrt oai university of bristol sosig cataloguing database framework higher education metadata research resource description rss standards url Tue, 29 Apr 2003 23:00:00 +0000 editor 949 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Planet SOSIG: A Spring-clean for SOSIG: A Systematic Approach to Collection Management http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue33/planet-sosig

Lesly Huxley, Emma Place, David Boyd, and Phil Cross report on a spring-cleaning exercise for SOSIG using a systematic approach to collection management.

The SOSIG collection

The core of the SOSIG service, the Internet Catalogue, now holds over 21,000 structured metadata records describing Internet resources relevant to social science teaching, learning and research.
