There were over 150 participants, about one half from outside the UK. As a prelude to the conference proper, a one-day workshop entitled "Information Infrastructures for Digital Preservation" was held at the same venue on the 6 December. The article introduced the idea of using metadata-based methods as a means of helping to manage the process of preserving digital information objects.
