The BIOME launch event I reported on in the last issue of Ariadne was particularly important in providing the opportunity to gain users' comments and suggestions about the Service. We are delighted that people view the service - and indeed the entire Resource Discovery Network [1] - as providing a valuable internet tool. However we are conscious that BIOME needs to develop further and we are keen to respond to the needs of our user community.

issue27 regular column paula manning university of nottingham database portal resource discovery search technology url web services z39.50 Fri, 23 Mar 2001 00:00:00 +0000 editor 779 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Metadata (1): Encoding OpenURLs in DC Metadata http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue27/metadata

Andy Powell and Ann Apps propose a mechanism for embedding machine parsable citations into Dublin Core (DC) metadata records.

This article proposes a mechanism for embedding machine parsable citations into Dublin Core (DC) metadata records [1] based on the OpenURL [2]. It suggests providing partial OpenURLs using the DC Identifier, Source and Relation elements together with an associated 'OpenURL' encoding scheme. It summarises the relevance of this technique to support reference linking and considers mechanisms for providing richer bibliographic citations. A mapping between OpenURL attributes and Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES) [3] elements is provided.

issue27 regular column andy powell ann apps cornell university d-lib magazine iso mimas niso ukoln university of bath university of manchester bibliographic data browser cookie database dcmes dcmi digital object identifier doi dublin core dublin core metadata initiative html identifier metadata namespace openurl research resource discovery schema search technology sfx software standardisation standards url vocabularies web browser xhtml Fri, 23 Mar 2001 00:00:00 +0000 editor 780 at http://www.ariadne.ac.uk Metadata (2): Towards Consensus on Educational Metadata http://www.ariadne.ac.uk/issue27/meg

Paul Miller describes the work of the UK's new cross-sectoral Metadata for Education Group (MEG) and calls for widespread support of their first deliverable: the MEG Concord.

As Pete Johnston illustrates elsewhere in this issue [1], e-Learning is big business, and likely to get bigger.
