Well over a thousand libraries around the world now have Web servers (according to <a href="http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Libweb/">Libweb</a>, a directory of library-based Web servers at <a href="http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Libweb/" title="http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Libweb/">http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Libweb/</a>), and many have public terminals available for accessing the Web. The word is increasingly to be found bandied about amongst the Web <i>cognoscenti</i>, but what exactly is it, and is it something that can be of value to you and your work? This article aims to explore some of the issues involved in metadata and then, concentrating specifically upon the Dublin Core, move on to show in a non-technical fashion how metadata may be used by anyone to make their material more accessible. The leafy 70 acre campus was purpose-built in the 1930s, when the college moved from the Edge Hill area of Liverpool.
